At the southern tip of Alabama, the beautiful city of Orange Beach touches the serene waters of the Gulf of Mexico. This is also where Sun Harbor Marina offers boaters access to some of the best fishing and cruising destinations on the coast. When Howard and Liz Barton bought the facility, formerly known as Safe Harbor Marina & Storage, they decided its dry storage building needed to blend in with the natural beauty of the surrounding area.
So they chose single-source marina constructor Bellingham Marine to give it a new look. Accommodating 220 boats up to 32′ in length, the new Unistack® facility features unique architectural enhancements that include shutters and bell towers. And, as with all of Bellingham’s projects, the building incorporates structural elements that enable it to withstand the weather extremes common to the area.
The name “Orange Beach” refers to the citrus groves on Terry Cove and Cotton Bayou in Perdido Bay. This location is also home to many Gulf Coast charter fishing fleets, several easily accessed golf courses, beaches, and water activities, making it an ideal vacation destination.

Boat owners in Naples, Florida, will soon have a new facility to store their 30′ to 42′ boats, thanks to Bellingham Marine and principals of Naples Bay Development Inc. In downtown Naples, where structural designs are required to blend with the surroundings, Bellingham will install a new Unistack® storage building for Naples Bay Yacht Stowage.
Boaters will purchase storage space in the structure, sometimes referred to as a “rackominium.” Because of the limited number of wet and dry facilities in the area, property owner Craig Palmer sees this unique building as a great opportunity for local boaters. The structure will utilize 115,886 square feet of space and accommodate more than 170 recreational boats and small yachts.
Bellingham personnel have extensive experience engineering Unistack® buildings, and their designs always take into account the prevailing weather conditions common to installation locations. The company also offers custom shelf widths and configurations to fit different sizes and types of boats. Unistacks® can even be built as open-sided arrangements.

Bellingham Marine Australia recently completed the Olympic Berths stage of the Rozelle Bay Superyacht Marina for the Waterways Authority in Sydney, Australia. Bellingham was chosen to supply and install its Unifloat concrete floating dock system, providing 17 superyacht berths and 20 berths for support tenders, in two stages.
The first stage—the Millennium Berths—was completed in time for the spectacular New Year celebration. The second stage—the Olympic Berths—was completed before the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Steel piles were used to moor the heavy-duty Unifloat concrete floating marina system and to accommodate the loads applied by the superyachts. UHMW pile slides are used in each of the pile guides.
To handle the extreme loadings exerted by superyachts on their moorings, a unique stake pile and chain system was driven into the seabed for the vessels’ bow lines. The mooring system was specially designed to handle the large lines of the world-class yachts expected to use the services of this purpose-built marina. The marina features sewage pump-out, electric and potable water services for each berth. The service pedestals were manufactured by Marine Technologies of Nerang, Queensland, and installed by Marina Electrical and Plumbing Pty. Ltd. Project managers were Tom Sims and Gary Charlwood of Bellingham Marine and Peter Whiteoak of the Waterways Authority.

Bellingham Marine has moved its Connecticut office to a 12-acre property at 225 Hanover Road in York, Pennsylvania. The move gives the company’s northeast operation ample office space, increased manufacturing capacity and a spacious garage. Total area is 24,235 square feet. The facilitiy’s new batch plant allows increased high-quality manufacturing volumes, and the location offers significant space for storage and expansion. The area’s milder weather conditions will permit year-round production and facilitation of curing processes. Everett Babbitt, executive vice president, said, “We are very excited about this new, state-of-the-art facility. It will allow us to better serve the needs of our customers in the northeast region.” Bellingham will benefit from York County’s proximity to six of the nation’s top 25 markets, an excellent transportation system and York County’s productive, skilled labor force. The move also means York area communities will share in the prosperity and long term growth that come with the introduction of Bellingham’s marine business. With the continuing growth of boating in northern Florida, local marinas have seen the demand for dry storage grow as well. Ron Foster, Sr., of the Stella Group, recognized this need and has contracted with Bellingham Marine to construct a large drystack facility at the group’s Palm Harbor Marina.
Located at 14503 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville, Florida, the building consists of two main aisles with racks on both sides of either. Its 486 racks handle boats up to 35′, and exterior additions are available for mixed-use retail office space and marine-related repair shops. As with all Bellingham projects, the structure will incorporate features determined by the area’s prevailing climate and weather conditions.
Before Foster purchased the marina, it was known as Jacksonville Yacht Basin. The grand opening of the new Palm Harbor Marina drystack storage facility is scheduled for spring of 2000.
