At various locations around the Port of San Diego, work is being performed as part of a capital improvement program to make public docks accessible to all visitors, whether or not they have disabilities. Current Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations require that replacement floating docks be larger in footprint than existing docks.
To oversee the work, Bellingham Marine was selected as the general contractor. Drawings and specifications were prepared by staff members of the port’s engineering department for installation of six of Bellingham’s Unifloat concrete floating modules. When complete, 16′ x 80′ docks will be in place at the Shelter Island boat launch, Shelter Island fishing pier, an open moorage area in the north section of the Bay, the access ramp to the San Diego Maritime Museum’s Berkeley, Pepper Park’s dinghy dock and the boat launch at Chula Vista Marina.
Landside access will be modified to provide safe, modern, ADA-accessible pathways between existing parking spaces and the docks.

Every year it seems that the world’s original mega and super yacht marina draws more exhibitors and visitors to the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. In September 2003, the Bahia Mar Yachting Center will welcome regular users, and in October, show attendees, with a completely new look and truly world-class amenities.
The Southeast Division of Bellingham Marine Industries was awarded the turn-key contract to replace the existing 360 fixed, concrete and wood slips with 235 Unifloat concrete floating slips. The company will provide both the standard 18″ freeboard Unifloat and 30″ high-freeboard megayacht Unifloat systems to better accommodate larger boats. The slips will range in size from 45′ to 120′. Side-tie slips will handle superyachts over 130′.
Bellingham’s contract includes the manufacture and installation of the float systems, furnishing and driving piling, and supplying utilities, including electrical, plumbing, marina sanitation and fire suppression systems, telephone and fiber-optic computer wiring. The utility system will provide additional power and water for the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, as well as the day-to-day operation of the marina.
Larger slips will offer a choice between single- and three-phase electrical service. Electrical usage will be read remotely by the marina staff to facilitate arrivals and departures of the guests. All slips will provide three telephone lines and a fiber optic, high-speed digital line for computer equipment. Sewage pumpout will be handled at each slip by an on-demand, vacuum pumpout system.
The fire protection system will be enhanced by fire pole alarm pull stations. Located on world famous Fort Lauderdale Beach and the Intracoastal Waterway, Bahia Mar was originally built in 1949. Its facilities include a Radisson hotel and conference center, boat brokerages and service facilities, a charter fishing fleet, water taxi center, shops and restaurants. The marina also offers concierge service, paper delivery and refuse pickup, room service directly to the boats, shower facilities, laundry and 24-hour uniformed security.

Presenting panoramic views of the Georges River from its uninterrupted waterfront, the St. George Motor Boat Club now offers even more state-of-the-art amenities to its members and guests. The Club, situated on the shores of Kogarah Bay, Sydney, NSW, Australia, is now home to a Unifloat® floating dock marina designed and installed by Bellingham Marine.
The Club’s facilities now include 138 slips for boats ranging in size from 30′ to 50′, with two spots for 60′ craft and three more for 65′ boats. In addition to these changes, Bellingham removed the existing fixed jetty and replaced it with a Unifloat® skirted wave attenuator to provide a calm, protected boating environment, as well as additional berthing during the Club’s special events. The company also removed and replaced the racing control tower.
Dockside amenities and utilities, featuring service modules from Marine Technologies, include sewage pumpout, electricity, potable water, fire suppression and a fuel dock. A new “visitor’s pond” provides a marshalling area for boat racing events, a standby area for boat ramp users and spare 26′ inshore slips for wedding guests, visitors and restaurant patrons.
The St. George Motor Boat Club hosts races that draw competitors from all over Australia and overseas. The original clubhouse was opened in 1921, and additions and extensions have been made ever since, including a registered kilometer course for speed records.
During 2002, Kogarah Bay was closed to professional fishermen in order to encourage a rejuvenation of weed beds. As part of the initiative to rehabilitate the bay, seagrass beds were transplanted before dredging works and construction of the new marina were permitted to commence. The St. George Motor Boat Club regularly hosts parties and formal celebrations for weddings, presentations, family reunions, holiday celebrations and corporate functions.

FISHING HEAVEN IS HOME TO A WORLD CLASS MARINA
In the Bahamas, less than 50 miles from Miami, anglers can find some of the best game fishing in the world. They can also enjoy the laid back atmosphere and newly developed docks and amenities at Bimini Sands Marina. The marina center on South Bimini Island meets the needs of the facility’s condo residents and scores of transient boaters and fishermen who visit each year.
Single source marina constructor Bellingham Marine was contracted to design and supply its Unifloat concrete docks. Owner Frank Cooney explained, “I chose the Bellingham product for several reasons. First is ease of installation. The docks are delivered almost completely assembled and are virtually maintenance-free. Because we experience a lot of tide fluctuation, floating docks provide a much safer walking surface than fixed docks. And finally, the concrete docks offer a much higher degree of protection against tropical storms and hurricanes.”
The first phase of the project saw installation of fourteen 50′ docks; the second, fourteen 60′ docks; and the final phase will add sixteen 50′ docks. When complete, the marina will be home to 141 Unifloat slips from 50′ to 120′ in length, with 30/50-amp electric supply and potable water. Also in process on the property are 216 luxurious condos for permanent residence and rental.
