Located near the entrance of New Zealand’s Whangarei Harbour, Marsden Cove Marina is the latest and arguably one of the best show case marinas in the pacific. The 240 berth marina was designed and built by Bellingham Marine New Zealand to meet the stringent guidelines set by the developers. “Bellingham Marine was chosen for their price, dependability, quality, and ability to cater to the specific needs of the development, which is destined to become one of the most sought after marine destinations in Northland” says Stace Hopper, Project Manager for Marsden Cove Ltd.
The Bellingham Marine Unifloat® pontoon system was built and installed in under 10 months and included 3,800 m2 of pontoons. The berths range from 10 to 35 metres accommodating catamarans, cruising vessels and recreational boats. The marina includes a state-of-the-art fuel berth and sewage pumpout facilities. Other amenities include, slip side pumpout services for berths 18 metres and above, a high specification full “user pays” electrical system, specially designed floats to complement the curves in the marina basin, and composite boards over walers and gangways to provide a world class look. “The marina is truly unique and offers the best possible product to the marina’s valued clients” says John Papesch, Project Manager for Bellingham Marine.
The standards of Marsden Cove Marina are unparalleled in the region and reflect the commitment of the team. The developer Marsden Cove Ltd, a joint venture between Northland Port Corporation and Hopper Developments Ltd., and Bellingham Marine worked together to deliver exceptional results. “The team’s commitment to quality and functionality is undeniable; it is another Bellingham product delivered on time and on budget” says Andy Stephens, Sales and Marketing Manager for Bellingham Marine. The marina construction is part of a coastal development, which includes retail shops, apartment style accommodations, and 700 lots 350 of which are canal frontage with private docks.
Completion of the marina was stage 1 of a 10 stage development and marked the opening of this benchmark facility. Whangarei Mayor Pamela Peters opened the site to the public on the 9th of December and congratulated the vision and success of the developers. The opening event was attended by an excess of 3,000 guests and media representatives.

Located in a prime location within Auckland’s Okahu Bay and in close proximity to popular boating areas of the Waitamata Harbour, Orakei Marina is one of New Zealand’s latest and most exclusive marinas. The new marina adds 172 full-finger berths to the region providing moorage for vessels 12 metres to 40 metres. Bellingham Marine New Zealand, Ltd. designed and installed the floating structures including the wave attenuator. The marina includes a number of innovative features such as single piece fingers, single piece t-heads, and prestressed hollowspun concrete piles and utilizes Bellingham’s concrete pontoon system – the Unifloat®.
The biggest challenge for the Orakei development team was gaining the rights to develop the site. The site, known as Okahu Bay Landing, was first identified as an ideal location for a marina over 40 years ago. The Orakei Development team negotiated the support of the local iwi and successfully worked together for the timely completion of the marina.
The marina basin is protected from the north and west by rock breakwaters and the south by a 3 metre wide floating attenuator. The fuel jetty is also protected by a 3 metre wide “skirted” attenuator. In addition, berths are sited to account for southwest prevailing winds and northeast storm conditions ensuring boats within Orakei are well protected.
The marina caters to recreational boaters, yachtsmen and sports fishermen alike. The marina features extra wide berths to accommodate multi-hulls and 3-phase power to meet the needs of today’s yachts. Berths have full utility services including power and water. The marina also includes fuel and sewage pumpout services with individual pumpout hydrants at each berth on piers D and E. Restrooms, showers and laundry facilities are also available on site. Although Orakei is a private marina, it provides public access during daylight hours and includes a fishing platform on the outer rock breakwater.
Located on site is the Akarana Yacht club. Future shoreside development is planned including the addition of several cafes and restaurants. The marina is also located just minutes from Auckland’s commercial business district providing easy access to dining, shopping, and residential communities.

Designed to improve efficiency, enhance quality control, and meet higher levels of demand, Bellingham Marine Europe has opened the doors to its new production facility in the Polígono SKOL industrial area just outside Barcelona, Spain. The plant will serve as a casting production facility for the company’s Unifloat pontoons and will house offices for the production staff. The new facility replaces a smaller, temporary facility that was located within the city limits of Barcelona.
“With current large contracts to fulfill and increased demand anticipated for 2007, we needed a state-of-the-art facility with greater capacity” said Bellingham Marine Europe’s general manager Matthew Hardy. The new 1,600 square meter factory with 3,000 square meters of yard space provides ample capacity and an ideal environment for casting concrete.
Level floors and control of temperature and humidity are critical to achieving strength, durability, and crack resistance in concrete. The walls of the new facility have been foam insulated to assist in keeping the facility at a constant temperature. Specially constructed floors were designed for casting beds to ensure a level base with an accuracy of 3mm over the length of the pontoon moulds.
Strategically located alongside the main highway between Barcelona and France, the new location provides easy access into Europe and throughout the rest of Spain and is well placed to supply projects in emerging markets in North Africa. There are also a number of large Ports in Barcelona and neighboring provinces, which provide alternative options for transportation around the Mediterranean.
The ability to keep the new plant in close proximity to Barcelona was an important factor. The region offers a moderate climate and a central position within the Mediterranean. Bellingham Marine Europe has a strong network of suppliers in the area and a number of concrete plants are located nearby. In addition, Spain provides an opportunity for lower operational costs, access to innovative engineers who are knowledgeable in concrete, and access to a skilled labor force.

Known for its great fishing, beautiful coastline, and laidback lifestyle, Carrabelle, FL now has one more thing to boast about. Nestled in a protected basin along Florida’s coastal panhandle, the Carrabelle Boat Club designed and built by Bellingham Marine, provides boaters with direct access to the Gulf of Mexico as well as a secure place to store their vessels.
Bellingham Marine designed and managed construction of the Unistack facility, plus designed and installed the Unifloat staging docks. Bellingham delivered a state-of-the-art facility. “They were outstanding and are the only contractor we’ll work with for marina related construction,” stated Frank Donohue, Director of Operations for Dream Harbors.
Designed with three aisles, the Unistack building at Carrabelle combines the best in modern security with the utility of dry storage. It has 285 dry racks and can accommodate boats from 40’ in length to 25’ in length and 16’ in height. Boats are retrieved from the racks via two Wiggins Bull Lifts. The Wiggins Lifts were custom designed to ensure the turning radius of the lifts were equal to that of the aisles.
The racks at Carrabelle Boat Club are being sold under a condominium arrangement. According to Dream Harbors, a condo arrangement was the only viable solution that made financial sense given the high cost of constructing any new marina facility in the state of Florida. So far, the club has seen great success with 90 racks already sold. The 40’ and 25’ – 30’ were the first to go with the mid-sized racks making up the majority of those remaining.
Rack owners enjoy a handsome clubhouse, a full range of amenities, a guaranteed life time of direct water access, the potential to build equity, and the chance to avoid ever increasing rental rates. Members have unlimited in and out service and can call ahead to have their boats fueled up and waiting for them. Other services offered by the club include boat detailing, engine flushing, light maintenance and winter season care.
