BELLINGHAM MARINE NEW ZEALAND OBTAINS ISO 9001 ACCREDIATION

May 9, 2007 / No Comments

It is with great pleasure and pride we advise all of our customers and friends that Bellingham Marine New Zealand has achieved ISO 9001 quality accreditation.

John Spragg BMNZ’s General Manager said “it was a superb team effort and I was pleased with the vigor and commitment everyone in the BMNZ group displayed in achieving this accreditation. The whole team bought into the process.” BMNZ has become the 6th plant in the group to achieve quality accreditation and the other 4 plants have extensive quality plans in place or are working towards accreditation.

BMNZ is the only quality accredited marina builder in New Zealand.

The ISO 9001 accreditation process was lead by Matt Gould, BMNZ Operations Manager who said, “Bellingham Marine, world wide, has an unprecedented 49 years of experience in the manufacture of pontoons and marina construction and we have achieved this external recognition of quality as part of our ongoing commitment to the industry, and for the benefit of our customers. We encourage others to follow our lead, maintain quality and avoid shortcuts.” Matt also said he found it interesting that apart from Bellingham Marine New Zealand and Bellingham Marine Australia there is only one other marina company with any accredited quality system in this geographic area.

The Bellingham Group congratulates the BMNZ team on this fine achievement.

As the worlds leading marina designers and builders, Bellingham Marine produces Unifloat, Unideck and Unistack storage facilities.

FORT LAUDERDALE MARINA EXPANDS MEGA-YACHT CAPACITY

April 30, 2007 / No Comments

Prized for its desirable location, just north of Port Everglades Inlet, the Lauderdale Marina owned by The Shipyard LLC in Fort Lauderdale, Florida provides boaters with direct access to the Atlantic Ocean and all major waterways in the area including the Intracoastal and the historic New River. Bellingham Marine was hired as a design-build contractor to provide the marina with six new, state-of-the-art, floating concrete slips to accommodate boats up to 88’ long and 23.5’ wide.

Bellingham Marine supplied 2, 028 square feet of Unifloat docks with electrical provisions designed to supply each of the new slips with 200 amps of power. Bellingham Marine’s internal utility design enables the Unifloat to meet a wide range of code, environmental, and accessibility requirements as well as handle the mega yacht’s ever increasing demands for more utility services.

Additional amenities at Lauderdale Marina include slip side pumpout stations, water, telephone, and cable services. The owner’s, The Shipyard LLC, are very pleased according to their president Ted Drum with the addition of the new mega yacht slips and boasts about Bellingham Marine’s services. “Bellingham Marine did an outstanding job and we’ll proudly show off our new docks.” The marina has approximately 80 slips with dockage available for boats from 30’ to 150’.

Established in 1948, Lauderdale Marina is one of the region’s oldest family owned and operated marinas and is considered by many to be among the top boating facilities in Florida. The marina is a one-stop shop for individuals looking to buy, rent, repair, or fuel up a boat. With a 350’ fuel dock and 11 fuel pumps, it’s the states longest. Also on site is the renowned 15th Street Fisheries restaurant.

As the world’s leading marina design/build construction company, Bellingham Marine produces Unifloat saltwater systems, Unideck freshwater systems and Unistack dry storage systems for marinas worldwide.

INDEPENDENT STUDY CONCLUDES FLOATING CONCRETE DOCK PROVIDE ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFIT

April 9, 2007 / No Comments

Turrell and Associates, Inc., a marine and environmental consulting company based in southern Florida released the results of an independent study conducted on concrete floating dock systems and potential environmental impacts. The study was sponsored by world renowned, marina constructor, Bellingham Marine in an effort to determine the effects of floating concrete docks on the surrounding marine environment.

Carried out in a private marina in Florida located on a man-made tidal waterway, the results of the study demonstrate the advantages of concrete floating docks go well beyond the obvious advantages of ease of access for boaters and secure mooring for vessels to four main environmental benefits.
1. Less bottom disturbance
2. Reduction in leaching of toxic wood treating chemicals
3. Increased natural hard surface habitat for marine organisms
4. Reduced turbidity and increased water quality
The need for fewer piles and frequent use of concrete piles means less bottom disturbance and a significant reduction in leaching of toxic wood treating chemicals into the water. In addition, concrete’s high carbonate content is similar in make up to naturally submerged rock providing a large natural surface area to support the colonization of marine organisms.

The increased hard surface habitat has significant environmental importance because the majority of life supported by the concrete docks’ hard surface feeds by filtering suspended material, thus helping to improve water quality within the basin. The dense filter feeder population supported by the concrete docks is particularly beneficial in environments that receive stormwater runoff. The filtering activity of these marine organisms reduces the turbidity near the floats, which enhances light penetration. Increased light penetration benefits growth of algae on docks and in the bottom community below them.

The study was started in May 2003, just three months after installation. Observations made during the initial visit revealed a diverse collection of organisms already covering both float sides and bottoms. The most obvious organism was a mix of green and brown algae. Within the algae were barnacles, sponges, oysters, mussels, grass shrimp, mud crabs and juvenile stone crabs. Subsequent visits took place in following years with a final visit to the site in September 2006. During this last visit increases in the number and size of organisms attached to the floats were noted.

Electronic copies of the study are available in PDF through Bellingham Marine. To receive a copy of the study please contact Bellingham Marine at bmi@bellingham-marine.com.

D’ALBORA WILL ADD 178 BERTHS TO MELBOURNE’S WORLD RENOWNED DOCKLANDS

March 20, 2007 / No Comments

Located in the heart of Melbourne Australia, Victoria Harbour is the latest marina complex to be built in Melbourne’s world renowned Docklands. One of five different marina projects in the area, Victoria Harbour was quoted by Mark Haycox, urban designer for the government authority VicUrban, as being the “the best so far.” The new marina at Victoria Harbour was designed and constructed by Bellingham Marine Australia, Pty Ltd. and features the company’s patented Unifloat® pontoon system.

This world class boating facility boasts the best in modern mooring with secured access, first-rate amenities, and a myriad of shoreside services. All berths are fully wired with utilities including power and water. A public pumpout station is also available on site.

The first phase was completed in December of 2006 and included the installation of 72 berths over 3 main arms with an additional 106 berths planned for a second phase. The arm nearest the city has ten berths dedicated to short term public mooring access with the other two arms servicing long-term tenants. The marina’s berths range in length from 10 to 35 meters and accommodate a variety of vessels including, motor yachts, sails boats and catamarans.

Project milestones and delayed access to the work site required works to be carried out in a five week window. Bellingham Marine achieved the required duration of this fast tracked project by closely managing the project team of contractors. The project was completed on time and to the high quality level expected by Bellingham Marine and the developers.

Developed and managed by d’Albora Marinas, upon completion, Victoria Harbour will accommodate 178 vessels and will offer property owners living in Melbourne’s CBD the opportunity to moor their boat within a short walk of home or work. The vision for Victoria Harbour includes a mix of commercial, residential and retail space complimented by a state of the art marina.

As the world’s leading marina design/build construction company, Bellingham Marine produces Unifloat saltwater systems, Unideck freshwater systems and Unistack dry storage systems for marinas worldwide.
