Located on the LeFevre Peninsula in South Australia, the Largs North Marina is the first stage of the Marina Adelaide Development which will include a complete marine industry complex, combining sailing club facilities, a private marina and an industrial subdivision capable of supporting a range of marine-related industry uses. The goal of the Marina Adelaide Development is to create a world-class multi-purpose marina and a viable hub that will act as a catalyst for growth in the industry.
The first phase of marina construction was performed by Bellingham Marine. It involved the relocation of the Port Adelaide Sailing Club and the construction of 99 Unifloat berths for club members featuring single piece fingers and the new Sterling service units from Marina Technologies. Bellingham Marine’s scope of work also included construction of access points and a launching platform for participants in the Sailability program for sailors with disabilities.
A manmade basin was designed to accommodate the sailing club as well as a private marina with service and dry storage facilities. Bellingham Marine will begin construction of the private marina, Marina Adelaide, in coming months. The private marina will provide 99 Unifloat berths for vessels from 15m to 24m.
Revisions to layout designs and issues related to disposal of huge volumes of material delayed filling of the marina basin for almost six months. “Land Management Corporation, the state government agency facilitating the development, used this delay to their advantage and worked with Bellingham Marine and the Port Adelaide Sailing Club to further develop the sailability pontoon area to arguably the best in Australia if not the world,” said Kevin Cook, Project Manager for Land Management Corporation.
The Port Adelaide Sailing Club was relocated to the redevelopment area of Port Adelaide from its old site where it had been for over 100 years. The Port Adelaide Sailing Club is known as a “working man’s club” with an emphasis on providing facilities and a supportive club environment to all comers. The change in location is sponsored by the State Government and offers significantly improved facilities from the old site in the Port River.

The boatbuilding industry is enjoying an economic boom in mega yachts 80 feet and longer pushing marina owners around the world to build larger slips to accommodate larger yachts. Bimini Bay Resort and Marina, located on North Bimini in the Bahamas, is no exception. The original marina was built in two phases. Bellingham Marine began work on the first phase in 2000, and by the completion of the second phase, the Marina had capacity for 136 boats 40 feet to 128 feet in length. In 2007, Bimini Bay Resort and Marina hired Bellingham Marine to begin construction on a mega yacht marina. The expansion project added 96 mega yacht slips to the marina allowing the marina to accommodate vessels up to 205 feet in length.
The marinas at Bimini Bay Resort were designed and built to minimize impact on the surrounding environment. “Bellingham’s Unifloat dock system was selected for the dock systems’ ability to provide increased habitat for marine life and to promote improved water quality,” said Rafael Reyes, President of Bimini Bay Resort and Marina.
Based on a study conducted by Turrell and Associates, the Unifloat system has shown to provide four primary benefits to the surrounding environment.
1. Use of fewer piles leads to less bottom disturbance.
2. Use of concrete piles, instead of treated wood piles, is better for water quality.
3. Concrete’s high carbonate content is similar to naturally submerged rock providing a large surface area to support marine life.
4. The presence of floating concrete docks leads to an increased population of filter feeders resulting in improved water quality.
The Marinas have also adopted a number of policies to support environmentally friendly operations. The marinas prohibit overboard flushing of holding tanks into the marinas’ waters and provide in-slip sewage pump-out services. The marinas also provide garbage collection containers on the docks to promote appropriate disposal of waste. Information regarding environmental responsibilities is also posted for guests throughout the resort and marina.
Bimini Bay Resort and Marina offers world-class accommodations to yachtsmen and fishermen alike. Surrounding the marina are beach condominiums and villas, swimming pools, tennis courts, shopping and fine dining. Future expansion plans for the marinas include the addition of a fuel dock and on-site repair facilities.

Located in the coastal city of San Buenaventura (commonly known as “Ventura”) between San Francisco and Los Angeles, CA, Ventura Harbor Village Marina was renovated to update the facilities. Marina constructor Bellingham Marine and engineer URS /Cash and Associates were hired for the project, which includes replacement of the marina’s existing wood docks with concrete floating docks, upgraded utilities, and installation of new gangways.
The Ventura Harbor Village Marina has approximately 400 slips ranging in length from 30 to 80 feet. The facility was renovated and reconfigured, in a series of phases, to create a better variety of slips and to meet an increased demand for larger berths. The marina also hosts several charter boats for which Dock I was rebuilt with a wider configuration to accommodate passenger boarding and equipment loading needs.
The completed marina boasts Unifloat® docks with upgraded utilities. Bellingham’s Unifloat® system was chosen for its performance and compliance with California’s Layout and Design Guidelines for Marina Berthing Facilities. Power, water, cable and internet services are accessible slip side with individual metering. Several new gangways have also been installed, including an ADA compliant 80’ gangway at the northern end of the marina. Restroom, shower, and laundry facilities are available shoreside for marina tenants – plans have been made to renovate these facilities as well.
URS /Cash and Associates and Bellingham Marine have teamed up on a number of projects in Southern California. “We have enjoyed a very good relationship with BMI on this project and many others over the last several years. BMI makes a high quality product and is very responsive to special engineering challenges and to the client’s needs,” said Randy Mason, engineer for URS /Cash and Associates.
The Ventura Harbor Village Marina is located in the heart of Ventura Harbor Village, a waterfront promenade with unique shops, restaurants and hotels. The marina has transient slips as well as slips dedicated to commercial fishing vessels, charters and long term tenants.

An evening full of celebration and festivities marked the opening of Apia’s new marina and floating restaurant – a first for Samoa. Catering to local residents and tourists alike the new marina on the Samoan island of Apia is a welcomed addition. Until now, deep water access and secure moorage around the island has been limited. Apia Marina, designed and built by Bellingham Marine New Zealand, features Bellingham Marine’s modern concrete floating dock system and affords deep water access and secure moorage.
Lack of mooring facilities around Samoa has limited local economic growth and has kept boaters from visiting the area. The marina and floating restaurant are an effort by the Samoan Port Authority (SPA) to encourage boating, boost tourism and generate alternative revenue.
Apia Marina is protected by a 40 meter floating wave attenuator and a 170 meter rock wall. The basin was dredged to a depth of 2.5 meters to provide deep water access for large vessels. The marina boasts 50 berths ranging in length from 10.5 to 30 meters – each equipped with power and water. The 30 meter berth was built with 200 amp – 3 phase power to meet the electrical requirements of larger vessels. A fueling station, showers, and customs are available at the Port facility.
“The new marina is a tremendous asset to Samoa and meets a great need,” said John Papesch, Project Manager for Bellingham Marine New Zealand. A second phase of the marina is planned which will extend the marina and add 30 more berths.
Referred to as the “treasured islands of the South Pacific”, Samoa is rich in culture and full of natural beauty. Waterfalls, rainforests, mountains, and miles of white sand beaches offer an experience like no other. Visiting yachts are required to contact SPA at least 2 days prior to arriving in Apia.
