New life has been breathed into a Naples, Florida property. Where once stood a rundown marina now stands a luxurious nine acre resort with private condominiums, a four star hotel, 33,000 square feet of retail space and a 97 slip full service marina. Antaramian Development Group awarded Bellingham Marine the contract to design and build the resort’s world class marina.
The completed Naples Bay Resort boasts the only hotel in South Florida with its own full service Yacht Club and marina. The state-of-the-art marina offers a fuel dock, in slip sewage pumpout services, and 50amp, 110/220 power supply. The marina accommodates private boats as well as charter boat services for sightseeing and fishing.
“Construction of the new marina presented unique challenges for our crew,” said Neil Davis, Construction manager for Bellingham Marine. “Every square inch of the property including the marina area was maximized and we were on a fast track timeline.”
The layout of the marina was designed to match the flow of the angled basin to optimize space and allow for adequate backing and clear water widths. Uniquely shaped dock modules were designed, fabricated and installed by Bellingham Marine.
Construction of the property began in late October 2007 after numerous delays related to local permits and work space on site. It was reported that at times, more than 20 different contractors with over 200 workers were on the property. Parking, material storage and just walking around were an adventure for the work crews.
The completed resort features architecture reminiscent of traditional Italian /Mediterranean design. Bold colors and careful attention to detail set the stage for this world class development and create a warm and luxurious ambience.

First built in 1953, Silver Gate Yacht Club located in San Diego, CA received final signoff on its $3 million dollar marina renovation Wednesday, October 22nd. The renovation, which included maintenance dredging as well as a complete rebuild of the Club’s marina, was completed in just under a year’s time. The Club hired world renowned marina builder, Bellingham Marine and leader in shoreline restoration, Anchor Environmental to lead the project.
“Bellingham Marine delivered the greatest value for longevity and an innovative phasing plan, which was the key to this successful project,” said the Club’s Commodore, David Lancaster. Bellingham Marine managed the project following a phased schedule. Sections of the marina were demolished then rebuilt in a consecutive manner allowing the Club to remain in full operation during the rebuild.
The completed marina features modern, barrier-free, floating concrete docks, a new concrete pile anchoring system and upgraded utilities. 147 double berth slips accommodate boats 25’ to 60’ in length. A dinghy dock located off the main walk features a hardwood finish and provides storage for members’ dinghies. Provisions for utilities, including power, water, and telephone are available at each slip. Also, on the docks is a new public announcement system.
The new marina provides guests of Silver Gate Yacht Club with barrier free access. An ADA compliant gangway and extra wide, stable docks exceed all ADA guidelines allowing persons to safely access the docks. Our club is committed to providing a barrier free facility, remarked Lancaster. “In 1960, we hosted our first Wheel Chair Regatta; today, our Regatta is the only event of its kind in the world.”
“In addition to universal access, low maintenance and the members’ ability to maintain the health of the docks in years to come was a top priority,” said Eric Noegel, Manager of Project Development for Bellingham Marine’s SW division.
The club’s landside facilities are also undergoing renovation. The new club house is in the design phase and expected to be completed early 2010.

Bellingham Marine Australia has taken the lead and embraced the Marina Industries Association’s Low Carbon Marina Initiative. Andrew Barson, of the Carbon Reduction Institute, gave Bellingham’s Brisbane manufacturing facility the ‘green’ light on 16 June, 2008.
By participating in the program, Bellingham will reduce the impact their operations have on the environment. This co-operative initiative will contribute to an anticipated 20% reduction in overall greenhouse levels from the marina industry by 2015.
Bellingham Marine General Manager, John Spragg said:
”For the past 50 years Bellingham has supported many initiatives to protect the environment. We have been heavily involved in a number of investigations proving that the presence of concrete floating docks enhances the ‘in water environment’.
Now we see the emerging climate change threat of enormous significance to the marina industry, and the planet for that matter. I have never been to an ugly place where a marina has been built, they are generally built in stunning locations, and these treasures need to be preserved for many future generations to come.
I was pleasantly surprised to read a technical report that showed the concrete we use in production of our marina systems is actually one of the very lowest CO2 producing products used in construction, whilst absorbing CO2 during its lifetime due to a process called Carbonation.”
Bellingham’s Brisbane facility is excited to now be able to reduce and offset a certain percentage of its operational greenhouse gas emissions and to provide customers with a carbon neutral choice at the point of sale.
By taking part in the low carbon initiative, Bellingham is able to pass on carbon credits received directly, to customers thereby helping them to reduce their carbon footprint. Along with improving the environment, Bellingham is also able to save customers money.
John commented “We all need to ensure our environment is improved for those who follow us, and we see the reduction of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere a project for each and every one of us.
I sincerely hope our competitors in the marina manufacturing industry follow our lead”.

A community wide effort is underway in Channel Islands Harbor, Oxnard, California. Marina operators and landside business owners dedicated to restoring the harbor’s infrastructure are working diligently to bring improvements to fruition. Owner, Steve Buenger of Marine Emporium Landing is investing over $10 million in improvements to his visitor serving retail center. The first phase of Construction, commenced in 2007, will be complete as of July 2008. This includes replacement of both the 34 year old dock system and the shoreside buildings.
One of the Landing’s two buildings burned down in October of 2005. Having been an active lessee within the Channel Islands Harbor for decades, Buenger was determined to rebuild. Development of a third building, approved long ago in the City’s Public Works Plan for the Center, was added to the project. “Since we would be engaged in the complex administrative process to permit the rebuild, it made sense to do it all at once,” said Semones, Project Manager for Marine Emporium Landing, LLC.
The 34 year old wood docks were also in need of replacement. “The design was a team effort. Bellingham Marine and URS Cash and Associates worked with us to optimize the use of our site and to build a marine facility that was beautiful as well as functional,” remarked Semones. Feedback on the completed rebuild has been overwhelmingly positive. “Our tenants had no idea it could look this good.”
The site was permitted for a 65’ gangway. An 80’ gangway would have placed the docks further out into the channel and outside the lease hold. According to Semones, the option to use a 65’ gangway was a critical element in the construction process. “Compact dock design and efficient use of space was also important; Bellingham Marine worked with us to make the most of the area within our lease hold, and to meet the safety needs of visitors to our facility, including bringing the marina within ADA standards,” said Semones.
The facility at Marine Emporium Landing utilizes Unifloat docks and provides commercial space for water oriented services. Slips are 80’ to 100’ with a few 65’ slips. Docks are serviced with power, water and fire safety equipment. Space within the facility is leased to several sportfishing charter companies, an 87’ dinner cruise paddle wheeler, boat brokers, and an electric boat and kayak rental company.
Channel Islands Harbor has over 2,000 boat slips, several boat yards and a strong boat-centric philosophy. The goal of the Harbor Department and local businesses is to rebuild the harbor into a thriving visitor and local serving recreational destination concentrated on the community’s strong boating culture. According to an article which ran in the Ventura County Star in July 2007, over the next five years nearly $200 million in improvements will be made to the Harbor’s land side businesses with additional funds going to improve the Harbor’s marinas.

Channel Islands Harbor Marina in Oxnard, CA is abuzz with excitement and activity to both boaters and staff as the last of the new slips are opened and boats that were temporarily relocated returned. The original 523 slip facility underwent an extensive renovation to replace the marina’s deteriorating docks and to update utilities.
Scheduled to take up to two years to complete, the renovation was completed in just 15 months. URS-Cash and Associates and Bellingham Marine managed the design and construction of the new facility. “The completed marina looks great and feedback has been overwhelming positive,” said Brian Dunn, president of Vintage Marina Partners, operators of Channel Islands Harbor Marina.
“We had a few challenges along the way but the construction team worked hard to minimize disruptions and to keep the schedule on track.” A phased construction plan was developed to allow sections of the marina to remain in full operation throughout the course of the rebuild project.
The renovated facility boasts 420 Unifloat slips for boats from 24’ to 60’ in length. Additional side tie areas accommodate yachts up to 106’ in length, and space around the outside of the docks is designed for wet storage of dinghies, electric boats, PWC’s and other small craft.
Services on the docks include power, water, telephone, cable, and wireless internet access. New custom entry gates, 80’ ADA compliant gangways, and a security /monitoring system have also been installed. Bathrooms with showers and storage lockers are on-site for tenants and visitors.
Be sure to stop by Channel Islands Harbor Marina and see the new facilities during the Ventura County Boat Show July 10th – 13th. Visit the show’s website at www.ci-boatshow.com/overview.html for further details.
