San Diego, California is preparing to enjoy its time in the spotlight: yachters are becoming aware of the locale’s desirable amenities and steps that the city has taken to make owners, captains, and crews of mega-yachts feel warmly welcomed.
Fifth Avenue Landing, located near the San Diego Convention Center, is an exclusive, 12-slip dockage facility designed and built by Bellingham Marine. Created for visiting mega-yachts seeking temporary stay on San Diego Bay, the Landing can accommodate yachts as large as 300 feet.
The Landing gains part of its appeal from its ideal location. Dockmaster Fred Larsson states that “[w]e promise mega-yacht owners, captains and crew the finest berthing experience they’ve ever had. Once [yachters] see what San Diego has to offer, they’ll be amazed.”
Located in the heart of the city’s downtown district, local attractions are within walking distance of the Landing – including beaches and parks, a scenic walking and bike path, world-class dining, shopping, concerts, lively nightlife, and the San Diego Padres ballpark. The San Diego Superyacht Association (SDSA) boasts, “[we] promise you that your stay in San Diego will be one of the most enjoyable yachting experiences of your career.”
The SDSA urges yachters to “take advantage of San Diego’s lifestyle for a few days, weeks or months and stay a while before cruising [onward].”
The facility’s primary goal is to provide high-quality service to their patrons. They offer complimentary concierge service for owners and crew, complimentary wireless internet connection, free parking, secured, controlled access 24/7, and black water pump out facilities at each berth.
Various innovative design features were utilized in the construction of the Landing. Assuring the service of most any vessel, substations were modified for additional power and were adapted to offer a plethora of receptacle options. Because the site is subject to tugboat wakes, a heavy-duty dock design with glu-lam beam walers was instituted. Extra wide fingers (9’3”-12′) were used, and each was detached from the main walkway to allow independent movement. The dock system also features higher than standard freeboard (24” versus 18”) to accommodate easy access and transferring of provisions to and from the yachts. “Bellingham’s experience in the construction of world-class marinas made them a perfect partner for this project,” said Larsson.
Fifth Avenue Landing also features ADA compliant access ramps, gangways and landing structures, railings, security gates, and access control systems.

Bellingham Marine Australia and local developers are working together to redefine waterfront living by offering upscale living accommodations in conjunction with world class marina facilities.

The residential buildings offer sweeping views and numerous amenities, including access to a private, boutique 17 berth marina built by Bellingham Marine.
The development at Norman Reach, a $100,000,000 venture by Stockland Developments includes apartments, penthouses, villas and homes. Pushing to become the West coast’s top yachting destination, San Diego is home to a new marina catering to yachts up to 175 feet. The Wharf at Point Loma, the region’s newest premier yachting facility, features waterfront dining, shopping, a large outdoor event park, and 50 of San Diego’s largest boating slips. The marina is ideally located in the America’s Cup Harbor with direct access to the Pacific Ocean.
The new marina developed by a partnership between Driscoll Inc. and GB Capital Holdings, LLC. was designed and built by renowned marina builder Bellingham Marine. The new marina features slips 40 feet to 100 feet in length in a single slip configuration and end ties for yachts up to 175 feet. Designed with attention to architectural style and functionality the marina boasts state-of-the-art amenities. Slips are equipped with potable water, power, sewage pump-out connections, telephone and cable TV access. 100A/208V, three phase power is supplied to end ties and 100 foot slips. A keyless security gate at the top of the gangway provides secured access.
Attention to detail and thoughtful planning are evident throughout the property. Two Timber framed buildings sit upland and a powder coated arched aluminum gangway greets guests as they enter the marina. Special attention was also given to the overall function of the facility. 40 foot and 45 foot slips are equipped with mini-frame connections. Bellingham Marine’s mini-frame design was utilized on a portion of the slips in lieu of the traditional triangle-frame connection to provide larger and wider boats a usable option for docking stern first remarked Bellingham Marine’s Manager of Project Development, Eric Noegel.
Having the boat stern first in the slip allows easier boarding since the transom is adjacent to the main walkway and the finger pier. It also places the boat’s connection outlets directly by the pedestal eliminating the hassle, and potential trip hazard, of having hoses and cords draped along the finger pier. “We utilized the Bellingham’s mini-frame design at Pier 32, in National City and have had a great response from our tenants,” said Eric Leslie, Director of Marina Operations at The Wharf.
San Diego is an ideal location for yachts because of its proximity to boat services, dining, shopping and entertainment. It’s also the first US port on the Pacific for yachts sailing from the South and the last for those traveling to Central and South America.

Florida’s central coast is known for its enjoyable cruising and great fishing. The new Sebastian Inlet Marina located in Micco, Florida on the west side of the Indian River Lagoon across from the Sebastian Inlet offers boaters a state-of-the-art modern facility with added storm protection and an ideal location.
The new marina features 25 wet slips and 240 dry storage racks. Bellingham Marine oversaw the waterside portion of the project. “Storm design was important in the design and planning of Sebastian Inlet Marina,” said Ron Carey, Manager of Project Development for Bellingham Marine. The original marina was destroyed by the hurricanes that hit Florida’s coast in 2004 – first by Hurricane Frances, followed by Hurricane Jeanne. Rather than rebuild, the owners decided to sell the property.
In 2005, the marina property was purchased and, over the next three years, redeveloped by an affiliate of Kennedy Holdings, LLC. The new marina was designed to withstand Florida’s extreme environment. The docks and dry storage building were built tough to handle strong winds. The owners have also developed a haul-out program for Patrons during named storms.
The marina’s wet slips accommodate boats from 30 feet to 45 feet in length. Each slip has dedicated power and potable water. The marina’s dry stack building can handle boats up to 40 feet in length and 38,000 pounds. Marine grade (non-ethanol) fuel, pump-out service and light mechanical repair service is available on site. Additional amenities include a captain’s lounge with internet service, private restrooms with shower facilities, and a ship store. The marina also offers safety courses to the public, and promotes community involvement through social events. “As boaters ourselves, it was important to us to build a marina that would provide boaters with a level of amenities and services that would enhance their boating experience,” said Ken Kennedy, President of Kennedy Holdings, LLC.
Since opening on Labor Day weekend, the marina has leased out about 100 of its 265 spots. “Response has been positive,” said Preston Perrone, CFO of Kennedy Holdings, LLC. “We knew things were slowing down and that we’d experience a longer lease-up period when we broke ground but we’re not far from our forecasted budget. In spite of the economy, we feel good about the level of interest.”
Sebastian Inlet Marina is committed to operating an environmentally friendly facility. The marina has been certified by the State of Florida as a “Clean Marina”, a “Clean Boatyard”, and a “Clean Ship Store”. The marina’s ship store offers a variety of biodegradable and green products. Sebastian Inlet Marina is one of a very few marinas in the state to receive all three designations.

The new megayacht marina at Wards Cove on Lake Union is now open. The marina is located in the heart of downtown Seattle, Washington and is part of the new Wards Cove on Lake Union waterfront development.
The freshwater marina features Bellingham Marine’s Unifloat system designed to cater to megayachts. The marina has eleven slips 95 to 100 feet in length with spectacular views of Downtown Seattle. Each slip is equipped with 200 amps of dedicated power, telephone, internet and TV services, sewage pumpouts, freshwater systems, and wash-water treatment posts with a phosphate cartridge and sediment filter to prevent spotting.
“Finding moorage for yachts over 75 feet within Seattle’s city limits is extremely challenging,” said Bill Weisfield, CEO of Wards Cove Packing Company. The new marina gives megayacht owners in the Pacific Northwest the option to moor at a world class facility in Downtown Seattle. 9 of the 11 slips have already been leased and interest in the remaining slips is strong, said Weisfield.
Wards Cove on Lake Union is a new waterfront community comprised of twelve floating home sites, a megayacht marina, and 14,500 square feet of office space. Floating home sites feature extra wide Unifloat docks and full utilities including power, sewer, water and gas. Upland construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2009.
The waterfront property on Lake Union served as a support facility for the Alaska salmon operations of Wards Cove Packing Company. In 2002, the Company exited the salmon industry freeing up the property for new development.
