Bellingham Marine is pleased to announce that Bahia Mar Yachting Center, located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and home of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show has been awarded the 2010 PIANC Marina Excellence Design Jack Nichol Award.
The selection committee determined the Bahia Mar Yachting Center best represents the award’s evaluation criteria, which focuses on function, aesthetics, and environmental stewardship. “It’s an honor for Bellingham Marine and everyone that worked on the project to have received this esteemed award,” said Everett Babbitt, President of Bellingham Marine.
The purpose of the Jack Nichol Award is to recognize excellence in the design of modern recreational boating facilities around the world.
“A tremendous amount of effort went into designing the Bahia Mar marina to function successfully as a dual purpose facility,” said Steve Ryder, Manager of Project Development for Bellingham Marine. “From a design standpoint, the marina had to operate as a world class yacht center eleven months out of the year and as the home of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show during October of each year.”
The marina’s principle features include large full-service slips with corresponding clear water widths, Unifloat® concrete floating docks with extra wide walkways and high dock freeboard, a functional slip layout that meets the needs of the marina as well as the boat show, and a site electrical transformer and distribution system that provides ample power to account for the high utility demands imposed by the boats on a daily basis as well as the massive utility demands of the boat show. In addition, the marina includes a number of innovative design features that enables the facility to make an easy transition from marina to boat show venue.
Since its inception in 2003, the Jack Nichol Award has existed as the trademark for outstanding marina design and is considered by many to be the most prestigious award in the world in this area. The award will be presented to Bellingham Marine and Bahia Mar at the Annual General Assembly of PIANC in May 2010.

After releasing its website in Spanish, Italian and French two years ago, Bellingham Marine has now introduced a Chinese language version of their site as part of the Company’s goal to reach out to international markets in their native written language.
The addition of Chinese to Bellingham Marine’s website will extend access to up-to-date product and technical information as well as recent news.
“We are very excited to be able to communicate with our Chinese reading customers in their native written language,” said John Spragg, General Manager for Bellingham Marine Australasia. “The new Chinese website is an important step toward providing our customers the highest levels of service and convenience.”
According to an on-line source, China has surpassed the United States to become the world’s largest internet using population and about one-fifth of the world’s population speaks Chinese.
“Bellingham Marine’s decision to expand the company’s website to include Chinese is a reflection of China’s on-line presence and emerging interest in the boating sector,” said Everett Babbitt, President of Bellingham Marine.

It is with great pride that we announce that three additional Bellingham Marine plants have achieved ISO 9001:2008 certification. The three newly certified plants include Bellingham’s NE plant in York, Pennsylvania; Bellingham’s SE plant in Jacksonville, FL; and Bellingham’s Drystack operations in Callahan, FL.
“It’s been a tremendous team effort and the ISO representative indicated that he was impressed by the enthusiasm for and acceptance of the program by all the employees at each division,” said Phil Greenman, Executive Vice President of Bellingham Marine. “We now have six ISO certified plants and one PCI certified plant. This is a great accomplishment and is yet another example of our commitment to ensuring a quality product to our customers every time.”
The ISO certification is not only a way for developers and marina owners to identify sources of added value but provides third party verification. Like ISO, the PCI accreditation process requires an in-depth quality assurance plan and thorough inspections of the plant and its operations.
“We’ll continue to strive for improvement by getting all plants certified,” said Greenman. “Certifying more than a single plant reassures our customers that no matter where in the world their project is the same quality and level of service will be delivered.” All BMI’s U.S plants are quality accredited as well as its plants in Australia and New Zealand.
The ISO 9001:2008 is an international standard for quality management, quality assurance, and continuous improvement. This standard refers to how an organization’s processes are designed and managed to transform inputs or services designed to meet the customer’s objectives.
Bellingham Marine’s NE division serves the eastern regions of the United States and the SE division covers the southeast region including the Gulf States, as wells as the Caribbean and South America. All the company’s drystack work done worldwide with the exception of Australasia, which is covered by Bellingham Marine Australia, is handled out of BMI’s Callahan plant.

The transient fuel dock at Morningstar Marinas | Mayport has recently been replaced. Located at the Mayport Inlet just East of Jacksonville, Florida, the fuel dock replacement was part of the complete redevelopment of the marina waterfront.
“The basin was in-operable and the fuel dock had been destroyed in a collision,” reported Matt Shapiro, Assistant Vice President of Morningstar Properties. “Bellingham has been a vital partner in the revitalization project at the marina.”
Morningstar Properties hired Bellingham Marine to replace the 14’ x 229’ long fuel dock. “We built the original fuel dock in 1994,” said Ron Carey, Manager of Project Development for Bellingham Marine.
Prior to and during reconstruction boaters were forced to travel inland for fuel and transient dockage. “The lack of services caused many boaters and traffic to leave the area; the closest fuel and dockage facilities are miles away,” said Shapiro. “Our goal is to refocus the boating energy in Jacksonville to the Mayport area, and completing this project was step number one.”
The Mayport location, at the inlet to the Atlantic, is the best destination for travelers up and down the east coast or local blue water boaters. “Mayport is the newest addition to the Morningstar network. Quickly getting the facility condition up to our high standards in order to offer our full range of services was a priority and that made Bellingham the right choice,” remarked Shapiro.
In addition to the fuel dock, which offers ethanol free gas and diesel, the marina has two dry storage buildings offering dry storage for 210 boats up to 30’ in length plus wet slips for boats up to 150’ in length. Morningstar Marinas is a collection of high quality marinas and marine properties throughout the Mid-Atlantic and the Southeastern United States. Morningstar Marinas offer a full range of services from wet and dry slip rentals to full service hospitality.

Following several years of planning, Runaway Bay Marina, located along Queensland’s East Coast, in the heart of Australia’s Gold Coast, commenced stage two of a three stage renovation. The first stage was completed in 2007.
Bellingham Marine was chosen as the head contractor tasked with the job of demolishing three existing arms including piling and replacing them with two new arms featuring concrete floating docks with rounded finger ends and upgraded services.
The vision for the project was to create a user friendly facility with more open water space and larger slips. Wayne Priestley, Bellingham Marine Queensland Project Manager said, “with a growing trend these days to maximize profits and get as many berths in as possible, it’s a refreshing experience to find a client who’s vision is to install less berths, but make them larger to give their tenants more room. More room means a friendlier and safer environment.”
The marina now has 195 floating berths servicing vessels from 8m to 18m, plus 2 fixed 20m berths, a 50m long loading dock, and a 60m fuel jetty. New upgraded electrical services include an option for single or three phase power. In addition, the marina includes a dry storage facility with capacity for 280 boats, a shipyard with a 35 ton travel-lift, restaurants, laundromat, fuel, bait, and new and used boat sales.
“Bellingham was chosen because of their experience rebuilding older existing marinas as well as their leadership in the development of concrete pontoon systems. We are extremely pleased with the work that has been done at the marina and our tenants are thrilled about all the upgrades,” said Mike Harvey, Manager of Runaway Bay Marina.
“To their credit the project was completed ahead of time and on budget with nothing but accolades from us, our tenants, and locals for the professionalism displayed in the planning and execution of the project.”
