Situated in the heart of historic Newport, Rhode Island in Perrotti Park, the city’s new Harbor Shuttle Landing Facility has effectively doubled the city’s downtown water transit facilities.
The new L-shaped landing dock, which measures 20’ x 55’ along the shore and 22’x 80’ perpendicular to the shore is part of Newport’s efforts to enhance its capacity to handle ferry, cruise ship and water shuttle traffic.
Heavy duty concrete floats with glulam walers were selected for the project. “With lots of boat traffic in the area and seasonal weather fronts the water in the bay can get a little rough,” remarked John Colonel, General Manager for Bellingham Marine’s Northeast division. “The Unifloat system with a double glulam waler was the right solution for the job and will serve the City of Newport well for decades to come.”
The floats also feature 24” freeboard to allow for easy access on and off the boats moored at the landing.
According to an article on Newport Now, city officials hope that by expanding the park’s facilities, the city will be better able to facilitate the disembarkation of passengers from the city’s growing cruise ship traffic, encourage expanded use of waterborne transit and generate additional revenue through tie-up fees.
Floats for the project were supplied by Bellingham Marine.

Moorage at Monaco’s Fontvieille Port has been significantly improved thanks to a complete upgrade to the Port’s floating piers. Bellingham Marine France led the renovation which included the replacement of the marina’s existing aluminum walkways with modern concrete floating pontoons anchored on chains as well as upgrades to the marina’s power and potable water systems.
The chain anchor system utilizes flush boxes constructed centrally in the pontoons along the walkways, which the chains pass through. This configuration allows for easy adjustment and regular inspection of the chain fixings without the need of divers.
“The extra wide, stable Unifloat walkways and additional upgrades have put the facility back on par with the world class yachts that frequent the harbor,” said Daniel Realini, Technical and Ports Operations Director of SEPM (Société D’Exploitation Des Ports De Monaco) the private entity who operates the ports of the Principality.
As part of the project, the outer pier of the marina, which is closest to the entrance, was designed 3.0 meters wide and has an increased continuous waler connection system which takes into consideration the waves expected at the entrance. This pier will act as an attenuator reducing wave action and providing protection to the piers and boats further inside the port. With this pier in place along with the mass of the other concrete pontoons installed as part of the project, the basin is now much calmer. Even during recent storm events the new concrete pontoons provided safe berthing to all boats moored within.
“The project had a number of challenges; however, Bellingham and the team delivered and the end result is a facility we are all proud of,” said Daniel Realini.
According to David Veyrat-Durebex, General Manager of Bellingham Marine France; narrow, steep roads, which made transportation difficult, restricted access times and location, limited space for staging and a streak of bad weather all added to the project’s unique challenges.
The Port’s improvement plans for Fontvieille have been underway since the early 2000’s. This latest round of improvements completes the Port’s plans for the facility. The completed marina accommodates 275 vessels up to 20 meters in length.

May 8th was a night of celebration for the Marina at Keppel Bay (MKB) team at the sixth annual Asia Boating Awards (formerly the Christofle Asia Boating Awards) held in Hong Kong. The three-year old marina was awarded their second Asia Boating Award – this year winning “Best Asian Marina of the Year.” In 2008, MKB won the “Best New Asian Marina of the Year.”
“This is one of the most competitive categories within the Asia Boating Awards with very strong competition from Hong Kong to the UAE,” commented Trevor Fong, General Manager MKB. “For us, this is not only about providing excellent facilities but more importantly, exemplary services without compromise on safety and security for homeowners and residents at Keppel Bay as well as our marina customers. This award reflects the shared commitment to quality and excellence by Keppel and partners such as Bellingham Marine.”
Marina at Keppel Bay forms part of the world-class Keppel Bay precinct at Singapore’s southern waterfront, which is developed by home-grown MNC Keppel Corporation Limited and its property arm, Keppel Land Limited.
The “Best Asian Marina of the Year” award honors marinas and design representatives who have made a difference in the maritime industry.
Marina at Keppel Bay was designed by Bellingham Marine in partnership with the Keppel team. The facility features state-of-the-art modern concrete floating berths with capacity for 127 yachts, including mega-yachts of up to 250 feet (76 meters). The berths were constructed over two phases, with 75 berths in phase one and 52 additional berths built in phase two. A third and final phase will commence shortly, which will bring the total berthing capacity of the marina to 166.
In a short amount of time, MKB has developed a strong brand that has become known for its world class service, exceptional facilities, and embodiment of the luxury marina lifestyle. Located on privately owned Keppel Island and designed with yachting and yacht owners in mind, MKB is uniquely positioned as Singapore’s premier destination.
The Marina complements Keppel Bay’s premier waterfront lifestyle offering. Owners of Keppel Bay’s luxurious homes, including the FIABCI award-winning Caribbean at Keppel Bay and iconic Reflections at Keppel Bay designed by master architect, Daniel Libeskind, enjoy true waterfront living with a private marina and a host of other waterfront amenities and facilities right at their ‘backyard’.
Trevor Fong, Francis Olsen and the entire MKB team along with Sim Kim Hui and his construction team need to be congratulated.
Conceived in 2005, the Asia Boating Awards has 22 categories all focused on the maritime industry. The awards are organized by Blu Inc Media, publisher of Asia-Pacific Boating and China Boating Magazine.
MKB’s award follows a string of awards for the world renowned marina builder, Bellingham Marine. Earlier this Year, the Bellingham built Bahia Mar Yachting Center in Fort Lauderdale, FL was awarded the esteemed Marina Excellence Design Award from PIANC. The two existing 2009 Australian Marinas of the Year, Empire Groups’ Bobbin Head Marina and Fenwick’s Marina were also built by Bellingham Marine.

It’s been almost two years since Hurricane Ike passed through the small community of Clear Lake Shores, Texas leaving behind a trail of destruction. Like many marinas around the Clear Lake and Galveston area, Portofino Harbour marina experienced the wrath of Ike with sustained winds of 110 mph (175 km/h) and a 16 foot (4.9 m) storm surge.
Although the marina made it through the hurricane better than others in the area, the docks did sustain some damage. The marina originally built in 1984 was completely occupied during Ike and the combination of age and extreme loads put on the docks by the boats broke several finger piers and pile guides. No vessels were damaged or sunk during the storm and good fortune played a role as two 5,000 gallon fuel tanks floated into the marina and sank in the fairways without striking any docks or vessels.
In fall of 2009, Portofino hired Bellingham Marine to lead a comprehensive repair effort to restore the marina.
Four finger piers were replaced as well as additional repair work completed to replace walers, steel weldments, steel through-rods, cleats, pile guides, triangle-frame covers and other miscellaneous accessories. Due to the modular construction of the dock system, Bellingham was able to remove all finger piers from the water and perform a thorough inspection. After new wood and rods were added the floats were placed back in the water. The main walkways were rehabilitated in place allowing crews to keep the utility systems intact resulting in hundreds of thousands of dollars in repair costs savings.
“The refurbished marina looks like new; you’d never guess the docks were 26 years old,” remarked Roy Nelson, President of Portofino Harbour. “The whole process went smoothly and we were able to keep our owners in the marina. Boats were moved around within the basin as the work progressed.”
“The docks still had a lot of life in them,” said Steve Ryder, Manager of Project Development for Bellingham Marine. A total of 16 float modules out of 824 were replaced during the work. “These old floats show little signs of the years of service they’ve provided and have many years left in them. A complete rebuild did not make sense.”

Located in the tropical South Pacific surrounded by pristine oceans and white sandy beaches, Port Denarau Marina, on Fiji’s West Coast is positioned as the center of yachting activity in Fiji.
In February, the Marina completed a (NZ) $2 million floating jetty, which added 46 berths to the small island. The project was built as a joint effort between Bellingham Marine New Zealand and the Skeggs Group of New Zealand.
Designed to cater to mega yachts and to meet the growing demand for slips in the Fijian Islands, the new jetty at Port Denarau Marina offers 46 berths ranging in length from 12 meters to 65 meters. Ten of the new berths were built to accommodate super yachts and are capable of taking 65 meter yachts with 5 meter drafts.
The new berths are fully serviced with power and water hook-ups and feature Bellingham’s Unifloat® system. When asked about the new docks Nigel Skeggs, Denarau Marina CEO, said “the Bellingham Unifloat Marina is the first of its kind for Fiji. The Unifloat product not only meets our tough cyclone and particular design requirements but also looks fantastic; and so far has led to a significant increase in bookings for our upcoming season.”
The marina also offers a range of services including repair and commercial barge services.
A supermarket, pharmacy, bakery, bank, restaurants, bars and hotels are within walking distance of the marina and an 18-hole golf course is just a few minutes’ drive away. Also nearby are the towns of Nadi and Namaka which boast restaurants, shopping, night life, hotels and spas.
Bellingham Marine designed, manufactured and supplied the docks for the Denarau project. Denarau Marina Ltd, oversaw piling, utilities and installation. Steel Pile and dried Fijian hardwood for the dock system’s walers were sourced locally.
“Throughout the design, building, shipping and installation of our new marina, Bellingham Marine kept an open line of communication and extended their expertise to myself and my staff. They were happy to assist us in all aspects of the job,” said Skeggs. A professional, sincere and technically advanced company with a great product – what more could any marina ask for?”
