Residents of Santa Barbara, California welcome the completion of the first phase of work at Santa Barbara Harbor’s Marina 1, located along California’s southern coast.
The first phase of a multi-phased project to replace the marina’s approximately 500 slips was started in November of last year and completed in August. “We’re all happy to have this first phase of the project behind us and are looking forward to working with Bellingham Marine as we move forward on the next phases,” remarked Karl Treiberg, Santa Barbara Harbor Facilities Manager.
Phase one included replacement of the marina’s 1160’ long headwalk and access gangway, as well as upgrades to the marina’s utility infrastructure.
To minimize disruptions to the marina’s operations and maintain boater access during construction, the new headwalk was built parallel to the existing. Once construction of the new walk was complete the existing headwalk was removed and the new walkway was moved into place.
Eric Noegel, Project manager for Bellingham Marine said the installation methodology was the result of good planning and communication with the City and their tenants. The City developed an alternate access plan for boaters to get to their slips at times when the single gangway was under construction.
The new headwalk at Santa Barbara Harbor’s Marina 1 is 10’ wide by 1160’ long and provides access to and from the marina’s 500 slips. Designed with a slightly higher freeboard then the existing docks, sloped transition floats were installed between the new headwalk and the existing mainwalks. Once adjacent mainwalks are rebuilt in later phases the sloped transition floats will be removed.
The project also included upgrades to the marina’s electrical and mechanical infrastructure along the headwalk including potable water, sewer, gas and fire suppression systems.
Bellingham Marine furnished all supervision, management, services, labor and material for the project. The next phase of construction, which will include replacement of docks “O” and “P”, has been awarded to Bellingham Marine and is scheduled to start next year.

Bellingham Marine announced recently its plans to consolidate its European operations and move its staff and capital equipment to the company’s existing facility just north of Barcelona.
“This strategic move not only lowers overheads by combining physical office and plant locations, but also creates synergies in our manufacturing and construction operations that will allow us to provide greater value to our customers,” explained Chris Lamont, General Manager for Bellingham Marine Europe.

Following a year and a half of construction Albany Marina, located at Providence Point in the Bahamas, is nearly ready to welcome the marina resort’s first visiting vessels when the community opens in October.
August marks the completion of the first phase of construction of Albany’s 71-slip marina, which included the dredging of a mile-long, 150 foot wide channel and the creation of a 15-acre deepwater basin with a controlling depth of 16 feet MSL. To date, they have installed 25 of the marina’s largest finger piers, ranging from 50 feet to 240 feet in length.
Crews are completing final work on the utility and fuel systems, including a state-of-the-art fuel dock featuring high-speed fuel dispensers.
A unique feature of Albany Marina is the six activities platforms located in the southwest and north sections of the marina. These large decks provide over water space for slip owners to use for everything from staging areas for provisioning their vessels to spaces for hosting friendly gatherings.
The look and feel of Albany Marina is nothing short of spectacular, featuring all the latest in amenities and dock design. Everything at Albany Marina has been supersized to cater to mega- and superyachts.
Main walks measure 12 feet wide, and fingers range from eight to 10 feet. Docks feature freeboards of 30 inches, and gangways are rated for use by golf carts and other service vehicles. A single 12 foot wide gangway, rated for use by larger vehicles, has also been installed to access the central fuel dock and dock master’s office. Concierge services, crew facilities and access for provisioning and special fueling also distinguish Albany Marina.
The completed resort facility will boast an Ernie Els-designed golf course, luxury cottages, single-family homes and marina residences, an equestrian center, a luxurious beach club and more. The vision of Joe Lewis, together with golf legends Tiger Woods and Ernie Els, Albany is positioned to become a world-class yachting destination.
Slips at Albany have been sold through membership with the Albany Yacht Club.
