Reconstruction of Alamitos Bay Marina in Long Beach, California, which has been held up in permitting for the past few years, is anticipated to move forward in spring 2011. The project calls for the complete replacement of the existing 1,967 slip marina over a period of four or five years. In addition to the docks and other marina structures, the marina’s parking lots, restrooms, gangways, seawall and utilities will also be rebuilt.
In May, a contract with Bellingham Marine, international marina builder, was fully executed for the completion of the design, much of the permitting and the start of construction in Basin 4.
The Long Beach Marinas, which include Alamitos Bay and the Downtown Marinas, are the largest singly run marina system west of Chicago. “A marina of this size comes with its own unique set of challenges,” said Jim Puder, General Manager for Bellingham Marine’s SW Division. “We have a strong team in place, and we are looking forward to providing the City and its tenants with a new marina facility that exceeds their expectations in every way.” Bellingham’s team includes Manson Construction, Reyes Construction, and Moffatt & Nichol. The team will be responsible for all waterside as well as landside improvements.
The last hurdle for the marina is a Coastal Development Permit from the State Coastal Commission. The City is expected to go before the Commission in January 2011.
Once complete, the new facility will boast the industry’s best in floating dock technology and the latest in green design. “The dock system and marina layout we’ve selected affords the most flexibility to meet our needs now as well as in the future,” said Mark Sandoval, Marina Manager of Long Beach’s marinas. “Several of the restrooms will also be fitted with solar panels,” added Sandoval.
The first phase of the reconstruction project is scheduled to begin in April of 2011.

An inauguration ceremony was held on October 18th by the Nice Cote de Azur Chamber of Commerce to commemorate the city’s new fishing docks located in the French Mediterranean in the city of Cannes. Bellingham Marine Executive Vice President, Phil Greenman, General Manager of Bellingham Marine Europe, Chris Lamont and Agusti Fontaclara, Project Development Manager for Bellingham Marine Europe were present at the occasion along with city and Chamber of Commerce officials as well as members of the Cannes commercial fishing fleet.
The project involved removing the existing fixed piers and replacing them with a modern concrete floating system fitted with custom fishing cabanas for secure storage of fishing equipment and overhead lighting fixtures. The facility’s utility infrastructure and access gangway were also upgraded.
Lamont stated, “The new docks include a number of special features and were built extra tough to withstand the heavy commercial use.”
Mooring rings rather than cleats to avoid snag hazards for nets, hardwood walers for added durability, extra high freeboard for easy vessel access, a wide gangway to support trolley traffic, steel mooring piles and high loading capabilities are just a few of the design features built into the Cannes Fishing Docks.
“To see the facility before and after is to truly understand the level of appreciation the Port and its tenants have for the new docks,” remarked Lamont. The previous wood docks were dilapidated and in desperate need of replacement.
At the inauguration, Lauren Monsaingeon, Ports Managing Director, commended Bellingham Marine for the company’s efforts and cooperation to provide the city with a commercial fishing facility that will serve its users for years to come.
Although Cannes is world famous for its boat show, its commercial real estate conference (MIPIM) and especially the Cannes Film Festival, it also has a rich heritage as a fishing village that still runs through its very core.
