Destroyed by Hurricane Ike in 2008, Bayland Marina, located outside of Houston, Texas in the Upper Galveston Bay, celebrated its grand reopening on April 5th with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The city Mayor, his staff and other prominent local civic leaders were present along with tenants of the marina and some of the contractors who worked on the project.
The celebration was kicked off with speeches giving special thanks to the individuals and companies involved in the rebuild process. One of the highlights of the celebration was a flag raising ceremony conducted by the Sea Scouts and their talented Bugle Corps.
“People in Baytown had waited three and a half long years for this day,” said Parks and Recreation Director, Scott Johnson. Bayland is the only marina in the area, so when the marina was destroyed, local boaters had to move their boats to locations outside Baytown. “There were a lot of happy faces at the grand opening,” remarked Andrew Gibb, Manager of Project Development for Bellingham Marine. “The feedback from the City has been wonderful and the boaters are elated to be back home.”
The new marina features floating concrete docks from Bellingham Marine designed to withstand an 18’ storm surge. High 20” freeboard, storm surge protection, upgraded power and full utilities services at the slip are just a few of the features of Bayland’s new facility.
As the world’s leading marina design-build construction company, Bellingham Marine produces Unifloat® concrete floating dock systems as well as timber and metal frame systems. The company also produces Unistack® dry stack systems for marinas worldwide.

James Island Yacht Club marked the grand opening of its new dock, located at the end of Wampler Drive in Charleston Harbor, on James Island, SC, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, March 10th. The Club’s Commodore, Mike Spivey, as well as many of the club’s members, and professionals who worked on the project were present for the ceremony. The new dock replaces the club’s former launching facilities located at the same site.
The club’s existing fixed pier and small launch float were replaced with a new fixed pier and 400’ of concrete floating docks from Bellingham Marine. “The [new] dock was constructed with great care and sacrifice by a dedicated group of yacht club members who served unselfishly to ensure its success,” remarked Spivey.
Situated at the end of the new fixed pier is a 240’ Unifloat dock for short term moorage and running parallel to the pier is a 160’ Unifloat launch dock. Two new gangways provide pedestrian access to the floating docks from the pier and a hoist helps move boats in and out of the water.
“The new facilities have had a positive impact on the club as well as the community,” said David B. Hazeltine, lead architect on the project for Cusick Hazeltine Architects, LLC. “Without Bellingham Marine’s involvement, the project would not have been supported by the club. The company’s extra efforts and dedication to the process of working through the design and pricing made all the difference and made it a pleasure to work through the details.” James Island Yacht Club was established over 100 years ago to promote sailing among its members and the community. The club has an active membership base and is best known for their sailing programs, community events and most notably for the Special Olympics Regatta.

Ideally located in the largest recreational boat harbor on the west coast of the U.S., Bellport’s Lido Yacht Anchorage & Drystack recently completed a renovation, which included the removal and replacement of a portion of the marina’s docks.
The renovation was scheduled to coincide with a large dredge project in Rhine Channel. In July of 2011, the docks were removed to facilitate the removal of over 90,000 cubic yards of dirt laced with mercury, pesticides and other toxic chemicals. The dredge project removed the Rhine Channel off the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s list of toxic hot spots and restored safe passage through the waterway for commercial and recreational vessels.
With the completion of the dredge project in November, Bellingham Marine began work installing the marina’s new docks. The docks for the project were supplied by Bellingham Marine’s Timber Division. New locker boxes, power centers, and fire hose cabinets were also installed. During the renovation, electrical components, potable water lines, and fire suppression infrastructure were also upgraded.
The new docks feature a specially engineering southern yellow pine deck enhanced with a moisture inhibiter to extend the dock’s service life. BellPort Group who manages the facility is extremely happy with the quality of the new docks. Bruce Inlow, Lido Yacht Anchorage Marina Manager said, “The quality of Bellingham’s timber dock surpasses anything we’ve seen in the timber dock market. It’s an extremely stable and durable design that’s beautifully finished with quality trim work. Our tenants have been very pleased with their new berths.”
The marina received final approval from the fire department on April 3rd. A popular destination for all boating activities including sailing, fishing, rowing, kayaking and paddleboarding, Newport Harbor is a semi artificial harbor that was formed by dredging an estuary during the early 1900’s. Once a thriving port for maritime industries such as boatbuilding, shipbuilding, and commercial fishing, today, the harbor is used mostly for recreation.

Bellingham Marine (BMI) and C.M. Ferrer S.A. announced that they have entered into an exclusive licensing agreement for the countries of Spain, France, Portugal and Italy. The agreement provides C.M. Ferrer with a license to manufacture and sell BMI’s patented marina systems including its popular Unifloat® concrete floating dock system and its Unideck® aluminum pontoon system.
The agreement reflects Bellingham’s commitment to grow its international operations. “We’re thrilled to unite Bellingham Marine’s unparalleled experience in the marina construction industry with C.M. Ferrer’s expertise in the local market,” said Everett Babbitt, president of Bellingham Marine. “In partnership with C.M. Ferrer, BMI will be better positioned to serve clients in Spain, France, Portugal and Italy.”
C.M. Ferrer is part of a family group of businesses that have a manufacturing cluster in Spain’s Girona province. The company has a 55 year history in precision engineering and fabrication of metal structures.
For the past several years C.M. Ferrer has supported Bellingham’s European manufacturing operations by supplying the company’s metalwork for its Unifloat® system. C.M. Ferrer’s group also owns Bellingham Marine’s existing facilities in Girona. C.M. Ferrer will retain the casting facilities and office space for its new marina division. The company also has an additional 30,0000m² of yard space and adjacent buildings on site. The extra space will be utilized as needed to expedite production to meet tight schedules.
Bellingham’s General Manger of its European operations, Chris Lamont, and the division’s lead staff members have been retained by C.M. Ferrer. “After operating in the European market for nine years, we made a strategic decision to move to a licensing agreement,” remarked Babbitt. “By consolidating our plant and staff with C.M. Ferrer’s extensive range of metalworking machinery and experience we can now truly offer any works asked in a marina project from bespoke gates and metalwork to office buildings and other amenities.”
“The Bellingham Marine brand and its range of products are among the most recognizable in the world, and this agreement gives us an opportunity to leverage that brand recognition to enter into the European marina industry,” said Josep Casellas, President of C.M. Ferrer. “This marks a significant expansion for C.M. Ferrer and demonstrates our ability to offer a broad range of products and construction services.”

Bellingham Marine, world renowned marina builder, is pleased to announce the relocation of their corporate office. On December 27, 2011, Bellingham Marine moved into their new location just a few miles from its previous location where it had been for over 80 years.
For Bellingham Marine, the new office space means upgraded communications and IT systems, new amenities for employees and room for growth. The company purchased the new office building in December of 2010 and leased back the office space until the company was ready to move. “Owning our own building gives us staying power in these uncertain economic times and creates a hedge against any future inflation,” said Paul Chapman, CFO for Bellingham Marine.
Bellingham now owns seven of its ten BMI-US plant and office locations. Chapman added, “There are significant financial advantages to being our own landlord that we enjoy at all of those locations.”
The new street address for Bellingham Marine’s corporate office is 1323 Lincoln Street, Bellingham, WA 98229. The mailing address of PO Box 8, Bellingham, WA 98227 remains the same along with all phone numbers and fax numbers.
“We were fortunate to find a nice building close to our old office and in a central location. We wanted to limit the impact that relocation could have on our clients and our employees. I don’t think we could have a better location for our team,” said Everett Babbitt, Bellingham Marine’s President and CEO. “Having the financial strength to make this purchase in the current real estate market, and remain debt free, allowed us to receive great value and create another sound investment for our owners.”
