On June 2nd, CKIPM CEO Mr. Kenny Kang and colleague Juan Carlos teamed up with Everett Babbitt, CEO of Bellingham Marine and John Spragg, General Manager of Bellingham Marine Australasia to give a presentation to leading Asian policy makers and practitioners at the 2012 Jeju Forum for Peace & Prosperity. The team’s presentation dealt with strategies for the Jeju Marine leisure industry focusing on the development and management of marinas.
The annual Jeju Forum is one of Asia’s major venue’s for political, cultural and academic leaders including incumbent and former heads of government to exchange opinions and discuss the vision for Northeast Asia’s future and to promote multilateral cooperation in the region. This year’s event was held May 31st – June 2nd on Jeju Island in Korea.
On the same trip, Mr. Babbitt traveled to Hwaseong City where he was welcomed by organizers of the Korean International Boat Show. Mr. Babbitt was invited to sit on a panel of marina development experts to discuss current industry issues.
“It was an honor to be asked to speak at these two events,” said Babbitt. “Korea has ambitious plans for the development of their leisure boating industry and is positioning itself to be a major player in the market.”
According to boat show organizers, the serious promotion of leisure boating in Korea was started in 2008 by Governor Kim Moon-Soo with the introduction of the Korea International Boat Show and Marine Festival in Jeonggok Marina in Gyeonggi Province.

Brewer, owner of 22 yacht yards from New York to Maine, hired Bellingham Marine to design and supply the dock system for upgrades planned at Brewer Greenwich Bay Marina, East in Warwick, RI. The upgrades included replacement of 30 berths. The marina opened the new docks up to boaters in May.
Brewer’s team selected Bellingham Marine’s timber dock system with an IPE hardwood deck for the project. “We couldn’t be happier with the new docks,” said Chris Ruhling, Marina Manger. “Never in my career have I been able to equate a dock to something sub assembled in a cabinet shop. The product is well constructed with very close attention to every detail.” As part of Bellingham Marine’s contract with Brewer, the company provided assistance with installation and training for Brewer’s crew. “Bellingham’s hands-on approach was greatly appreciated and will help us utilize our own crews more efficiently on future installations,” remarked Ruhling.
As a solution to high storm tides and a low take off height of the gangway, Bellingham Marine designed and manufactured a notched walkway. This unique design enables the dock to rise up on the outside of the gangway allowing boat owners to access their boats during high water events while protecting the dock, gangway and utilities from damage.
Brewer’s East yard offers top-notch amenities including power and water at each slip, laundry facilities, free WiFi, and recreational areas with horseshoe pits and a swimming pool. Slip sizes range from 20’ to 60’, accommodating both fishermen and recreational boaters alike.

Residents of Aransas Pass live and breathe fishing. The waters of Conn Brown Harbor are rich with fish and provide easy access to the Intracoastal Waterway. Once a natural safe harbor for local shrimp boats, when the shrimp industry died, so did the surrounding area. Businesses closed, boats were abandoned and the area became a ghost town.
For many years, the waterfront was neglected and the potential of Conn Brown Harbor sat unrealized. That has recently changed. In 2011, the City of Aransas Pass received funding through a grant program referred to as BIG (Boating Infrastructure Grant) to help finance the cost of a transient marina. The plan for the marina was to provide short term moorage for anglers and recreational boaters.
Once funding was secured, the design for the marina was finalized. Bellingham Marine was hired as the design /build contractor. The completed facility includes slips for boats up to 60’ with side-tie space for boats up to 100’. 75% of the total cost of the project was funded through the grant; the city provided the remaining 25%.
Power and water are available on the docks. A fuel dock is also on site. Upland from the marina is a dry storage facility with racks for 250 vessels. The docks as well as the drystack building are managed by Redfish Bay Boathouse.
According to Mike Moore, Operations Manager for Redfish Bay Boathouse, the project has been a great success story. “Everyone is elated,” remarked Moore. “They love the new marina and what it’s doing for the area.” The grand opening of the marina was marked with a Redfish tournament hosted by Cabela’s; Fox Sports SW was present. 42 boats and 84 anglers participated in the tournament.
