Located in the heart of San Mateo County, Oyster Point Marina, offers San Francisco boaters direct access to the bay. The City owned marina recently completed replacement of piers 8 and 11. Bellingham Marine, world renowned marina builder, was contracted to perform as the general contractor.
Oyster Point’s existing 20 plus year old glu-lam, timber system was replaced with Bellingham Marine’s concrete floating docks fitted with upgraded utilities and accessories. Upgrades were made to the marina to provide improved moorage for boaters in the San Francisco Bay area. Demolition started in January 2013. The marina’s guest dock, dock 8, was the first of the two to be replaced. The new guest dock provides 156 feet of side-tie moorage and is made accessible with a new 90 foot ADA gangway. Power and potable water are available on the dock for visiting boaters.
The second to be rebuilt was pier 11. The existing pier at dock 11 was replaced with a 332 foot long main walk with 24 single berth slips for boats up to 45’. A match-cast 21’ x 79’ floating platform was built at the bottom of the new 80 foot gangway to support traffic moving on and off the dock. The landing platform also provides additional moorage space. Bellingham Marine’s scope of work included demolition of the existing docks and the design, manufacture and installation of the marina’s new concrete floating dock system.
The marina’s old glu-lam docks were given to the America’s Cup to provide temporary moorage for racers over the summer. They will later be donated.
Oyster Point marina boasts 455 berths, a boat launch, fuel dock and a 300’ fishing pier. Other amenities include a 33 acre park with hiking and jogging trail, picnic facilities and a 2.5 acre sandy beach.

Bellingham Marine, world renowned marina builder, recently completed construction of new marina facilities for the US Navy at Sumay and Clipper Coves on scenic Apra Harbor, located on the remote island of Guam. The new facilities will provide improved boating access for the island and upgraded moorage for US Navy and Coast Guard vessels.
The comprehensive “modernization” project at the Guam Naval Base included upland, shoreline and waterside improvements. Approximately 19,152 square feet of new concrete floating docks were installed as part of the project.
Separate marina facilities were built for the U.S. Coast Guard and Port Operations. In addition, fifty slips were added for recreational use by military families and guests accommodating boats from 25’ to 45’ feet in length. A day use dock and new boat launch with floating docks were also installed to support leisure and charter activities.
Bellingham Marine provided the docks and performed all waterside work from the top of the gangways down including installation of utilities, gangways and dock accessories. Bellingham also installed a fire suppression system.
A portion of the floats for the project were manufactured out of Bellingham’s plant in New Zealand. The rest came from the company’s plant in Ferndale, Washington. Installation crews were sent from Bellingham Marine’s SW Division, located in Dixon, California.
“This project has been a great testament to the benefit of Bellingham’s worldwide presence and the company’s ability to pull from the strengths of multiple divisions to meet the needs of the project and the client,” said Bellingham Marine’s president, Everett Babbitt.
Moffatt and Nichol’s Long Beach office was contracted by the Navy to develop the original Request for Proposals and provide Post- Award Construction Support Services for the project. M&N’s project manager, Rob Sloop, said “Bellingham Marine demonstrated the ability to deliver a superior product in a remote location and to cooperatively solve challenges that arose in the field.”
Given Guam’s secluded location and conditions specified by NAVFAC, the project required tremendous coordination. There were a number of hurdles that had to be overcome. “This was a difficult project to execute successfully but we are pleased to be able to look back with satisfaction at the first class marina facility now at the Guam Naval Base,” said Jim Puder, Bellingham Marine’s General Manager of its SW Division. “Moffatt and Nichol provided great support throughout the project and were an invaluable part of the team.”

In a recent announcement, the American Society of Civil Engineers’ coastal institute known as COPRI (Coasts, Oceans, Port, and Rivers Institute) announced the winners of its 2013 Project Excellence Award. The Project Excellence Award, in the Large Project category, was awarded to Bellingham Marine, renowned marina builder in partnership with H+K Engineering Group, a leading dock engineering firm, for their work on Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) Marina, Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands. The project was designed and constructed for Victor International.
The project consisted of building a world class superyacht facility on a small island in the British Virgin Islands. The island’s limited infrastructure and the region’s exposure to dynamic weather events created some unique challenges for the team.
Accolades were given by the judges for the team’s success in delivering an award winning facility for YCCS Marina that addressed the difficult environmental conditions associated with the remote, deep water project site and the needs of the large yachts mooring to the docks. The project was also praised for its exemplary use of engineering best practice.
“Advanced modeling and analysis of how each individual pile would perform was vital to ensure the long term successful performance of the entire system,” said Bill Huffman, Principal and Senior Engineer at H+K.
The extreme nature of the Virgin Gorda site including water depths over 35 feet (9m) and extremely hard limestone combined with the loads placed on the docks by large vessels necessitated the development of a technically advanced floating dock system.
“It took a lot of hard work and dedication to get this project built right,” said Everett Babbitt, president of Bellingham Marine. “It is with great pleasure that we accept this prestigious award on behalf of the entire project team. We could not be more proud of the team’s efforts and what was accomplished.”
The project team included Bellingham Marine and H+K Engineering Group who worked in close concert with the ownership group which consisted of Victor International and Applied Technology & Management.
COPRI’s Project Excellence Award recognizes innovation, through both research methodologies and techniques which decrease negative environmental impacts and demonstrate significant achievement through design, analytical and construction concepts.

Florida’s City of St. Augustine is celebrating its 450th Birthday this summer and the construction of a new $2.4 million breakwater with moorage for mega yachts at the city’s Municipal Marina. The project was completed in June, just in time to welcome El Galleon, a unique 170 foot replica of a 16th Century Spanish sailing ship.
The 1,000 foot long, L-shaped floating wave attenuator was installed to help protect the marina from storms and storm surge. According to Carter & Sloope, the Georgia-based engineering firm specializing in marina construction, the breakwater will be able to reduce a three foot wave to six inches providing protection for the main docks as well as the vessels in the marina.
“We’re excited about the added protection the breakwater will provide for the marina,” said Sam Adukiewicz, the marina’s Harbormaster. “Almost every year, the marina receives a good amount of storm damage; the attenuator should help put an end to that.”
The attenuator will also provide new dockage for 9 each perpendicular boat slips along the east-west portion for smaller power boats plus three mega yacht slips on the outer dock for vessels up to 200 feet in length.
Bellingham Marine was hired as the design/build, general contractor. The company performed the design, manufacture and installation of the new breakwater including all electrical and plumbing work.
