The town of Westport, Connecticut, has taken another step to improve recreational amenities for its residents and out-of-town visitors. The community recently contracted with Bellingham Marine to replace the wooden docks at its municipal boating facility, E.R. Strait Marina.
The marina is now home to a 114-slip Unifloat concrete floating dock system for boats from 16′ to 32′, a new aluminum boarding finger and a new fuel dock. Bellingham also increased the size and strength of the existing wave attenuator to minimize wave chop. Parks and Recreation Director Stuart McCarthy said the concrete docks were the way to go for a long-term investment. He added, “Since the concrete docks were installed at nearby Compo Marina, we have seen that Bellingham has improved on an already good system. And Bellingham did the E.R. Strait project on an incredibly tight timeline in a very impressive manner.
This was a turn key project, from permits through utilities.” Westport also offers many other recreational pursuits, including an 18-hole golf course, beautiful beaches, a 75-yard swimming pool, clay and all-weather tennis courts, and even winter platform tennis.

Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, known to boaters as the “yachting capital of the world,” is home to a new, thoroughly modern facility built especially for megayachts by Bellingham Marine. The marina at Sunrise Harbor offers visitors only the best in dockside amenities, as well as close proximity to a beautiful residential community and yachting center.
The marina features 2,600′ of Bellingham’s Unifloat® concrete floating docks in a parallel construction that offers sideties for 22 megayachts up to 160′ in length. These special docks provide 30″ of freeboard, which is very appealing to megayacht owners. Also, dockside services leave nothing to be desired, with utility posts affording single- and three-phase power in 50- and 100-amp configurations; water, cable television and pump-out connections; and multiple telephone outlets.
Shoreside accommodations consist of 352 rental apartments, 17 guest suites and a host of retail shops. The list of recreational amenities is truly impressive and includes a library, business center with conference room, two lighted tennis courts, two swimming pools, 24-hour valet parking, fitness club with sauna and even a billiard room. Concierge services offer massage therapy, laundry/dry cleaning, personal training, package pickup and delivery and reservation services.

Since 1867, one of the finest yacht clubs in Sydney, Australia, has undergone several expansions and renovations. The latest major project at Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club was the replacement of fixed wood jetties with five new Unifloat concrete floating arms from Bellingham Marine Australia. During construction, boats were shifted to allow demolition, installation and pile driving with as little inconvenience
to members as possible. Matthew Bate, marina manager, and Tom Sims, Bellingham’s manager for New South Wales, coordinated the interface between the club and construction crews. The new floating slips feature Rockla spun concrete guide piling and Marine Technologies’ service pillars and fire stations. All told, the club provides storage, both wet and dry, for 412 craft.
Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club offers an extensive array of services for its members and visitors. Among them are marine electronics and mechanics services, a ships chandlery, yacht brokerage, sail repair service, tender service, yacht charter and sailing school, and even a gymnasium. Additional onsite amenities include bathrooms, showers and fine dining.

Belmar Marina, in Belmar, New Jersey, recently got a beautiful facelift as the first part of a two-phase project. The 125 existing wooden slips were replaced by 147 new concrete Unifloat® docks. The slips, ranging in length from 25′ to 60′, have full services available, and the marina has six or more transient slips.
The Unifloat system was supplied by Bellingham Marine, working with Birdsall Engineering and general contractor Simpson & Brown, Inc. Belmar is home to one of the widest, cleanest, mile-long stretches of beach on New Jersey’s coast. Swimmers and surfers enjoy the striking blue-green waters, as loungers and sightseers relish many seaside activities.
The town’s visitor-friendly atmosphere contributes as much to relaxation as strolling down the ocean-side boardwalk, playing at the beach playgrounds or hiking the nature trail. Belmar also hosts a number of events, such as the New Jersey Seafood Festival, AVP Pro Volleyball tournament, lifeguard tournaments, a firemen’s carnival and a kite festival in September.

Phillip and Eva Southcombe chose Bellingham Marine Australia to build the extension to their marina near the Gladesville Bridge in Sydney, Australia. In order to meet a short completion schedule, Bellingham assigned the contract to Bellingham Marine New Zealand (BMNZ), a member of the Bellingham Marine Group of companies.
The BMNZ project team, led by General Manager Bruce Birtwistle and Project Manager Chris Lamont, co-ordinated the design and construction management from Bellingham’s Auckland office. The production flexibility of the Bellingham Group allowed the pontoons to be cast in Auckland and shipped by container to Sydney with no additional cost to the client.
Bellingham has six manufacturing facilities, plus mobile manufacturing capability. The Southcombes traveled to Auckland to inspect the Bellingham Marine New Zealand factory and to participate in the final co-ordination of the shipment to Sydney. Phillip said that he was impressed by the professionalism of the New Zealand staff and was confident that the BMNZ quality and service would be consistent with that of Bellingham Marine Australia.
The Gladesville Bridge Marina extension consists of 40 berths utilizing the Unifloat system with Australian hardwood walers and concrete guide piling.
