FLOATING DOCKS HELP PROTECT BOATS FROM HURRICANE

February 1, 2004 / No Comments

When James Grady, general manager of Norfolk Yacht and Country Club, assessed the damages from September’s Hurricane Isabel, he was pleased that the marina chose Bellingham Marine to replace its fixed wood docks earlier this year.

The boats protected by Unifloat® floating concrete docks sustained no damage. “Bellingham did an excellent job,” said Grady. “The boats were shielded from the heavy wave action caused by the hurricane.” The company manufactured, supplied and installed the docks as part of Norfolk Yacht and Country Club’s extensive refurbishment program. Bellingham also provided innovative gangways designed specifically to handle high tide events that create a positive slope for conventional gangways.

Situated on the Lafayette River in Norfolk, Virginia, the marina offers 112 slips with full electrical and mechanical services. It has an impressive junior sailing program and is installing a 20′ x 200′ dock to accommodate it. A yachting club for power and sailing yacht owners features races, cruises and onshore parties. The exclusive club offers full service dining with a panoramic view of the water, year-round entertainment for adults and children, a state-of-the-art family fitness center, an array of racquet sports and outdoor pools.

BELLINGHAM MARINE HELPS MARINA PRESERVE LEGACY

December 16, 2003 / No Comments

Located at Walsh Bay on Sydney Harbour in Australia, the Walsh Bay—Pier 6/7 Moorings have historical significance as a former commercial wharf. A challenging project completed by Bellingham Marine allows boaters to enjoy expansive views from the renovated piers on Walsh Bay.

Bellingham Marine first installed two skirted Unifloat® wave attenuators to protect the area. The attenuators incorporate gangways from the timber boardwalks to provide public access to water taxis and sewage pump-out facilities. Also designed for Walsh Bay—Pier 6/7 were individual Unifloat® docks that serve as shared berths for boats up to 20m.

Bellingham’s unique stainless steel pile mooring bars with nylon thimbles help secure boats to the dock. Central pivoting brackets attach each dock’s gangway to the boardwalks to accommodate lateral and vertical movement caused by the boat traffic on the busy Sydney Harbor.

The restoration project on Walsh Bay includes boardwalks, apartments, a car park built below the water level of the harbour, private moorings, gymnasiums and swimming pools for residents. Restaurants, theatres and other commercial shops and businesses are incorporated into the extended Walsh Bay precinct.

HAYDEN ISLAND CONDO OWNERS HAVE OWN MARINA

November 20, 2003 / No Comments

Residents of Hayden Bay Condominiums on Hayden Island in northern Portland, Oregon, have access to numerous waterfront hotels, good restaurants and a shopping center. Now, condo owners have direct access to the Columbia River from their own marina adjacent to their residence.

Bellingham Marine installed Unifloat® docks to accommodate 19 slips that range from 36′ to 40′ with one 80′ slip at each of the docks. Every full service slip at Hayden Bay Condominium Marina is equipped with power and water hookups, and a locker box for storage. Bellingham also installed a 75′ aluminum gangway to provide dock access during all levels of water fluctuation.

Hayden Island is located within minutes of the Portland Metropolitan Exposition Center and the Portland International Airport. Most of the housing on the island consists of condos and floating homes.

RHODE ISLAND MARINA IS SUBSTANTIALLY EXPANDED

October 15, 2003 / No Comments

Overlooking Narragansett Bay, the Greenwich Bay Marina in Warwick, Rhode Island, recently completed the installation of a Unifloat® wave attenuator and a Unifloat® dock system. The exceptional quality of the Unifloat system from Bellingham Marine complements the extensive upland improvements of the marina.

Bellingham Marine’s Northeast Division coordinated the design and built the 21,961-square foot Unifloat concrete floating wave attenuator. It provides wave protection for the marina’s expansion, which extended beyond the existing rubble-mound breakwater and wooden wave fence system. It also set the marina’s perimeter limits. The attenuator was specifically designed for Greenwich Bay Marina’s site conditions regarding wind, wave, boat wake and the owner’s transmitted wave criteria.

Bellingham’s Unifloat wave attenuator system reduces the wave action entering a marina basin, creates additional mooring areas and permits tidal flow, thereby enhancing the marine ecology of the marina. Bellingham Marine also replaced the marina’s outdated wooden floating docks with its Unifloat floating concrete system. The Unifloat system is stable and won’t rot, burn, splinter, corrode or rattle.

Greenwich Bay Marina has 500 slips and features a restaurant, pool, spa-like bathroom facility and a new laundry area with lounge. The full-service marina provides inside, outside and wet storage, as well as boat hauling up to 60 tons. Lee Raymond, Greenwich Bay Marina’s owner, was pleased with the results. “Bellingham offers the best product on the market,” he said. “They delivered on time and provided exactly what we needed. It was a very good experience.”

BELLINGHAM LAUNCHES SERVICES IN EUROPE

September 10, 2003 / No Comments

Bellingham Marine Europe Ltd (BME), a subsidiary of Bellingham Marine Industries (BMI), has recently been incorporated in the UK to give BMI a presence in Europe. The purpose of this new company is to offer the hugely successful Unistack® dry storage systems and the proven Unifloat® concrete dock systems and wave attenuators, as well as the experience of Bellingham’s marina professionals, to the European marketplace.

“BMI, the world’s largest builder of marina berthing systems, has offices and operating divisions in Australia, New Zealand, Japan and throughout North America,” said Phil Greenman, executive vice president. “Our entry into the European market has been part of our business plan for some time, and we believe now is the right time to take this next critical step. Europe is a large and diverse market to which we will bring our marina planning and building expertise and experience, as well as some new solutions to old problems.

As an example, the Unistack dry storage berthing system, so popular in other parts of the world, is relatively unknown in Europe.” Bellingham Marine Europe Ltd is headed by Matthew Hardy, a British marina professional who has many years of experience in the industry. The company will offer European clients a personalized approach to provide tailored solutions that best suit individual needs. “We are keen to promote the Unistack dry stack storage system, as we see a huge need in many areas of Europe,” said Hardy.

“Dry storage is ideal for the Mediterranean and offers a simple, cost-effective solution to greatly expand berthing availability at almost any site.”
