SOUTH FLORIDA HOTEL BOASTS FULL SERVICE YACHT CLUB

December 10, 2008 / No Comments

New life has been breathed into a Naples, Florida property. Where once stood a rundown marina now stands a luxurious nine acre resort with private condominiums, a four star hotel, 33,000 square feet of retail space and a 97 slip full service marina. Antaramian Development Group awarded Bellingham Marine the contract to design and build the resort’s world class marina.

The completed Naples Bay Resort boasts the only hotel in South Florida with its own full service Yacht Club and marina. The state-of-the-art marina offers a fuel dock, in slip sewage pumpout services, and 50amp, 110/220 power supply. The marina accommodates private boats as well as charter boat services for sightseeing and fishing.

“Construction of the new marina presented unique challenges for our crew,” said Neil Davis, Construction manager for Bellingham Marine. “Every square inch of the property including the marina area was maximized and we were on a fast track timeline.”

The layout of the marina was designed to match the flow of the angled basin to optimize space and allow for adequate backing and clear water widths. Uniquely shaped dock modules were designed, fabricated and installed by Bellingham Marine.

Construction of the property began in late October 2007 after numerous delays related to local permits and work space on site. It was reported that at times, more than 20 different contractors with over 200 workers were on the property. Parking, material storage and just walking around were an adventure for the work crews.

The completed resort features architecture reminiscent of traditional Italian /Mediterranean design. Bold colors and careful attention to detail set the stage for this world class development and create a warm and luxurious ambience.

As the world’s leading marina design/build construction company, Bellingham Marine produces Unifloat saltwater systems, Unideck freshwater systems and Unistack dry storage systems for marinas worldwide.

INNOVATIVE PHASING KEY TO SUCCESSFUL REBUILD OF YACHT CLUB

October 29, 2008 / No Comments

First built in 1953, Silver Gate Yacht Club located in San Diego, CA received final signoff on its $3 million dollar marina renovation Wednesday, October 22nd. The renovation, which included maintenance dredging as well as a complete rebuild of the Club’s marina, was completed in just under a year’s time. The Club hired world renowned marina builder, Bellingham Marine and leader in shoreline restoration, Anchor Environmental to lead the project.

“Bellingham Marine delivered the greatest value for longevity and an innovative phasing plan, which was the key to this successful project,” said the Club’s Commodore, David Lancaster. Bellingham Marine managed the project following a phased schedule. Sections of the marina were demolished then rebuilt in a consecutive manner allowing the Club to remain in full operation during the rebuild.

The completed marina features modern, barrier-free, floating concrete docks, a new concrete pile anchoring system and upgraded utilities. 147 double berth slips accommodate boats 25’ to 60’ in length. A dinghy dock located off the main walk features a hardwood finish and provides storage for members’ dinghies. Provisions for utilities, including power, water, and telephone are available at each slip. Also, on the docks is a new public announcement system.

The new marina provides guests of Silver Gate Yacht Club with barrier free access. An ADA compliant gangway and extra wide, stable docks exceed all ADA guidelines allowing persons to safely access the docks. Our club is committed to providing a barrier free facility, remarked Lancaster. “In 1960, we hosted our first Wheel Chair Regatta; today, our Regatta is the only event of its kind in the world.”

“In addition to universal access, low maintenance and the members’ ability to maintain the health of the docks in years to come was a top priority,” said Eric Noegel, Manager of Project Development for Bellingham Marine’s SW division.

The club’s landside facilities are also undergoing renovation. The new club house is in the design phase and expected to be completed early 2010.

As the world’s leading marina design/build construction company, Bellingham Marine produces Unifloat saltwater systems, Unideck freshwater systems and Unistack dry storage systems for marinas worldwide.

SPORTFISH HEAVEN IN COSTA RICA

September 22, 2008 / No Comments

With just a few months to go before the boats move in, Marina Pez Vela is set tob ecome Costa Rica’s premier full-service marina facility. “We are incredibly excited at buyer demand and enthusiasm about the marina’s opening,” says project founder, Harold Lovelady. “The combination of our state-of-the-art facility and extraordinary location makes it an obvious choice for boaters and anglers.”

Take up by an international customer base has, indeed, been swift. Phase one of the 308-slip marina sold out by June promoting the release of phase two in July. This includes 40 slips with a starting price of US$175,000.

Designed and owned by sportfishing enthusiasts, Marina Pez Vela is located in the sportfishing mecca of Quepos. The marina will provide a safe haven and base of operations for fishing along the Pacific coast of Central America – opening up thousands of miles of ocean that were previously nearly impossible to fish. It will also include the first and only truly complete boatyard south of San Diego., California, and as such will meet the needs of an under-served market.

SACRAMENTO MARINA’S REMODELING DEALS WITH SOARING STEEL AND CONCRETE COSTS

September 15, 2008 / No Comments

When the city managers of Sacramento (Calif.) Marina decided to remodel the entire south basin and part of its north basin in late 2006, they felt good about themselves and the remodeling project. They estimated the cost of the remodeling project at $5 million to $6 million, and the marina had already secured a $9 million loan from the California Department of Boating and Waterways to pay for it. They set aside $8 million for the actual remodeling.

Sacramento Marina is a municipal marina, comprised of north and south basins, and serves a vibrant boating region that includes the Delta and recreational waterways from San Francisco Bay north to a thousand miles of accessible waterways.

Two major factors prompted the marina’s managers to move forward with this major capital improvement project. The first dealt with the marina’s age. The 50-year old south basin’s wooden docks, which floated on tubs, were long overdue to be ripped out and replaced with concrete-decked covered slips.

Harbormaster Bud Camper’s assessment was, “The south basin docks cost more to maintain than they were worth.” That being said, Camper had the complicated task of keeping the channel open and the marina running at the same time the construction was underway. More about that later.

The second factor involved the type of slips in the south basin. None of the original 240 wooden slips in the south basin marina were covered, which was a real drawback in this part of California. Here, the blazing sun that does wonders for the croplands that surround the city is not kind to boats in marinas. Therefore, shade is essential to maintaining docked boats, which is why the marina wanted all its docks to be covered.

Finally, the project was not just done for today’s boaters, but also for tomorrow’s customers. As redesigned to accommodate today’s longer and wider boats the south basin marina would have 191 slips. The loss of slips was not considered a problem, but rather a significant move forward. When combined with the 284 slips in the north basin that were installed in 1985, the Sacramento Marina would have a slip mix that would serve its boating customers for now and into the future.

BELLINGHAM MARINE GOING GREEN FOR BLUER WATERS

July 15, 2008 / No Comments

Bellingham Marine Australia has taken the lead and embraced the Marina Industries Association’s Low Carbon Marina Initiative. Andrew Barson, of the Carbon Reduction Institute, gave Bellingham’s Brisbane manufacturing facility the ‘green’ light on 16 June, 2008.

By participating in the program, Bellingham will reduce the impact their operations have on the environment. This co-operative initiative will contribute to an anticipated 20% reduction in overall greenhouse levels from the marina industry by 2015.

Bellingham Marine General Manager, John Spragg said:
”For the past 50 years Bellingham has supported many initiatives to protect the environment. We have been heavily involved in a number of investigations proving that the presence of concrete floating docks enhances the ‘in water environment’.

Now we see the emerging climate change threat of enormous significance to the marina industry, and the planet for that matter. I have never been to an ugly place where a marina has been built, they are generally built in stunning locations, and these treasures need to be preserved for many future generations to come.

I was pleasantly surprised to read a technical report that showed the concrete we use in production of our marina systems is actually one of the very lowest CO2 producing products used in construction, whilst absorbing CO2 during its lifetime due to a process called Carbonation.”

Bellingham’s Brisbane facility is excited to now be able to reduce and offset a certain percentage of its operational greenhouse gas emissions and to provide customers with a carbon neutral choice at the point of sale.

By taking part in the low carbon initiative, Bellingham is able to pass on carbon credits received directly, to customers thereby helping them to reduce their carbon footprint. Along with improving the environment, Bellingham is also able to save customers money.

John commented “We all need to ensure our environment is improved for those who follow us, and we see the reduction of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere a project for each and every one of us.

I sincerely hope our competitors in the marina manufacturing industry follow our lead”.
