The transient fuel dock at Morningstar Marinas | Mayport has recently been replaced. Located at the Mayport Inlet just East of Jacksonville, Florida, the fuel dock replacement was part of the complete redevelopment of the marina waterfront.
“The basin was in-operable and the fuel dock had been destroyed in a collision,” reported Matt Shapiro, Assistant Vice President of Morningstar Properties. “Bellingham has been a vital partner in the revitalization project at the marina.”
Morningstar Properties hired Bellingham Marine to replace the 14’ x 229’ long fuel dock. “We built the original fuel dock in 1994,” said Ron Carey, Manager of Project Development for Bellingham Marine.
Prior to and during reconstruction boaters were forced to travel inland for fuel and transient dockage. “The lack of services caused many boaters and traffic to leave the area; the closest fuel and dockage facilities are miles away,” said Shapiro. “Our goal is to refocus the boating energy in Jacksonville to the Mayport area, and completing this project was step number one.”
The Mayport location, at the inlet to the Atlantic, is the best destination for travelers up and down the east coast or local blue water boaters. “Mayport is the newest addition to the Morningstar network. Quickly getting the facility condition up to our high standards in order to offer our full range of services was a priority and that made Bellingham the right choice,” remarked Shapiro.
In addition to the fuel dock, which offers ethanol free gas and diesel, the marina has two dry storage buildings offering dry storage for 210 boats up to 30’ in length plus wet slips for boats up to 150’ in length. Morningstar Marinas is a collection of high quality marinas and marine properties throughout the Mid-Atlantic and the Southeastern United States. Morningstar Marinas offer a full range of services from wet and dry slip rentals to full service hospitality.

Following several years of planning, Runaway Bay Marina, located along Queensland’s East Coast, in the heart of Australia’s Gold Coast, commenced stage two of a three stage renovation. The first stage was completed in 2007.
Bellingham Marine was chosen as the head contractor tasked with the job of demolishing three existing arms including piling and replacing them with two new arms featuring concrete floating docks with rounded finger ends and upgraded services.
The vision for the project was to create a user friendly facility with more open water space and larger slips. Wayne Priestley, Bellingham Marine Queensland Project Manager said, “with a growing trend these days to maximize profits and get as many berths in as possible, it’s a refreshing experience to find a client who’s vision is to install less berths, but make them larger to give their tenants more room. More room means a friendlier and safer environment.”
The marina now has 195 floating berths servicing vessels from 8m to 18m, plus 2 fixed 20m berths, a 50m long loading dock, and a 60m fuel jetty. New upgraded electrical services include an option for single or three phase power. In addition, the marina includes a dry storage facility with capacity for 280 boats, a shipyard with a 35 ton travel-lift, restaurants, laundromat, fuel, bait, and new and used boat sales.
“Bellingham was chosen because of their experience rebuilding older existing marinas as well as their leadership in the development of concrete pontoon systems. We are extremely pleased with the work that has been done at the marina and our tenants are thrilled about all the upgrades,” said Mike Harvey, Manager of Runaway Bay Marina.
“To their credit the project was completed ahead of time and on budget with nothing but accolades from us, our tenants, and locals for the professionalism displayed in the planning and execution of the project.”

Construction of the new marina in downtown Stockton, California is complete and scheduled to open in November pending the City Council’s approval of an operator’s agreement.
The state-of-the-art marina located along the Stockton Channel features unique design, yacht moorage and space for permanent as well as visiting boaters. Six main piers – three side tie docks and 3 main arms accommodating boats from 50 feet to 80 feet – replace the city’s original marina, which was dilapidated and in needed of an overhaul. Bellingham Marine supplied the docks from their plant in Dixon, California.
A new promenade provides a natural link between the marina and nearby public destinations including a new sports arena and ballpark. Two, side tie docks on the north side of the basin, provide 878 feet of moorage for transient boats and offer easy access for individuals wishing to travel to local sporting events by water. A third transient dock, measuring 520 feet in length and located on the south side of the basin, provides direct access to shopping, local parks, and numerous other attractions including an outdoor amphitheater.
The marina features forty-eight 50’ slips, twelve 60’ slips, and six 80’ slips. Provisions for utilities including potable water, power, cable, and phone service are available at each slip. Potable water and power is available along the side tie docks. Restroom and shower facilities are provided on the south side of the basin.
In addition to modern concrete docks and numerous amenities, a unique fabric roof system installed over the marina’s 50 foot slips adds architectural style and provides shelter. The distinctive roof structure is mounted to the dock’s piling creating a few engineering challenges.
“Bellingham’s expertise in dock engineering and collaborative approach to design helped the project team overcome the challenges presented by the canopy’s stiffened pile system, providing the City of Stockton with the architectural look they wanted for their marina,” said David Mik, Project Manager for Power Engineering Contractors, Inc.
The result is a first class marina, for which the City of Stockton is proud. Believed to be one of California’s largest redevelopment projects, the new marina is part of a dramatic turnaround and revitalization of downtown Stockton, CA.

One of Florida’s oldest marinas and largest ethanol free fuel facilities has been upgraded with the addition of a new section of Unifloat® concrete floating dock. The Lauderdale Marina, originally opened in 1948 and located near the famous 17th Street Causeway in Fort Lauderdale, selected Bellingham Marine to provide the unique fueling facility for the first phase of work in upgrading the fuel dock at the marina.
Lauderdale Marina replaced 151 feet of its existing concrete fixed dock with 151 feet of modern Unifloat® concrete floating dock including 36” freeboard for large fuel operations on one side and a heavy duty bumper fender system on the opposite side to accommodate smaller vessels. The existing fuel system was retrofitted while the electrical, fire protection and pumpout systems were upgraded to fit the many users of the facility.
In addition to relocating four of the fuel dispensers, an option for a fifth was designed into the new dock allowing the marina to offer another fueling station in the future. The electrical system was also substantially upgraded with the addition of 100A service for temporary moorage of boats up to 200 feet. Lauderdale’s complete fuel dock measures 350 feet in length and offers 12 dispensers.
The new portion of the fuel dock was built in honor of Bob Cox’s vision for the marina. Bob Cox is the founder of the Lauderdale Marina.
“The new dock is spectacular and our customers are really pleased with it,” remarked Ted Drum, President and CEO of Lauderdale Marina when asked about the new fuel dock.
Situated parallel to the ICW within five minutes from the Port Everglades entrance from the Atlantic, Lauderdale Marina is one of the best known facilities in the South Florida market and is ideally located with easy access for both large and small vessels. The marina is home to the well known 15th Street Fisheries Restaurant as well as a bait and tackle shop, a marina store and service department, and a Boston Whaler and Pursuit boat dealership. Tenants at the marina include: Drum Realty, Homeland Security, First Performance Marine, Tow Boat USA, Muston Group, J. Walter McCrory, and 15th Street Boat Co, which rents new Boston Whalers.

Located in the high-profile community of Newport Beach, along California’s southern coast, Balboa Marina announced its grand re-opening on August 1st. The marina, owned and operated by The Irvine Company was originally built in 1964. Following several years of planning, the marina closed its doors in the fall of 2008 and work commenced on the $8 million renovation.
The reconstruction of Balboa Marina included demolition of the existing floating dock structures, dredging, seawall repair, sheet piling installation, landside work and construction of a new dock system including upgraded utilities and accessories. Bellingham Marine was hired by the Irvine Company as the design-build contractor.
The new marina offers state of the art accommodations for boats from 20’ to 60’ in length and four-star service. In addition to the marina’s new 105 double berth slips, side tie space for larger vessels was created.
All utilities, including electrical services and water supply lines, as well as the marina’s fire suppression system were upgraded. A new sewer pumpout system was installed that provides pumpout service at each slip. In addition, cable and phone hook ups were added to the slips.
The entire facility was completely rebuilt – everything from the parking lot, to the seawall railing system, to the marina itself. “We are very pleased with the work that has been done at Balboa Marina and our tenants are thrilled about all the upgrades” said Greg Sinks, Manager of Balboa Marina.
Construction of a 7,800 square foot eelgrass habitat area was created as mitigation for direct and potential eelgrass impacts due to dredging activities associated with the project. The newly configured marina also resulted in an increase of open water space and fewer guide piles. The result is a world class facility that has had a positive impact on the surrounding environment.
