CANNES’ COMMERCIAL FISHERMEN CELEBRATE THE COMPLETION OF THE CITY’S NEW FISHING DOCKS

October 25, 2010 / No Comments

An inauguration ceremony was held on October 18th by the Nice Cote de Azur Chamber of Commerce to commemorate the city’s new fishing docks located in the French Mediterranean in the city of Cannes. Bellingham Marine Executive Vice President, Phil Greenman, General Manager of Bellingham Marine Europe, Chris Lamont and Agusti Fontaclara, Project Development Manager for Bellingham Marine Europe were present at the occasion along with city and Chamber of Commerce officials as well as members of the Cannes commercial fishing fleet.

The project involved removing the existing fixed piers and replacing them with a modern concrete floating system fitted with custom fishing cabanas for secure storage of fishing equipment and overhead lighting fixtures. The facility’s utility infrastructure and access gangway were also upgraded.

Lamont stated, “The new docks include a number of special features and were built extra tough to withstand the heavy commercial use.”

Mooring rings rather than cleats to avoid snag hazards for nets, hardwood walers for added durability, extra high freeboard for easy vessel access, a wide gangway to support trolley traffic, steel mooring piles and high loading capabilities are just a few of the design features built into the Cannes Fishing Docks.

“To see the facility before and after is to truly understand the level of appreciation the Port and its tenants have for the new docks,” remarked Lamont. The previous wood docks were dilapidated and in desperate need of replacement.

At the inauguration, Lauren Monsaingeon, Ports Managing Director, commended Bellingham Marine for the company’s efforts and cooperation to provide the city with a commercial fishing facility that will serve its users for years to come.

Although Cannes is world famous for its boat show, its commercial real estate conference (MIPIM) and especially the Cannes Film Festival, it also has a rich heritage as a fishing village that still runs through its very core.

WORLD CLASS MARINA OPENS IN COSTA RICA

October 14, 2010 / No Comments

Situated along the spectacular coastline of Quepos, Costa Rica with direct access to some of the world’s best fishing, Costa Rica’s much anticipated premier destination and world class marina, Marina Pez Vela, is now open.

Built by world renowned, marina builder, Bellingham Marine, Marina Pez Vela features extra wide modern concrete floating docks; 100 full service slips with telephone, cable, high speed internet, fresh water and electrical hook ups; high speed fuel pumps; septic pump-outs and dockside concierge services.

Offering the luxuries of the world’s most prestigious marinas, Marina Pez Vela is an oasis for sports fishermen and cruisers alike. The marina’s slips range in length from 10 meters to 60 meters and can accommodate vessels up to 60 meters at its visitor’s berth.

According to Harold Lovelady, Partner, about half of the marina’s available slips have already been sold. “Given the demand we’ve seen for berths in the region, we are confident the remaining slips will go quick,” added Lovelady.

A second phase of construction is planned which will add 200 slips to the marina and a number of amenities to the already boastful accommodations including a maintenance facility with a 200-ton travel lift, an upscale boutique hotel, residential units, restaurants, and a retail center including tackle shop, marine supplies, deli and grocery store.

PHASE ONE UPGRADES COMPLETED AT SANTA BARBARA MARINA

September 30, 2010 / No Comments

Residents of Santa Barbara, California welcome the completion of the first phase of work at Santa Barbara Harbor’s Marina 1, located along California’s southern coast.

The first phase of a multi-phased project to replace the marina’s approximately 500 slips was started in November of last year and completed in August. “We’re all happy to have this first phase of the project behind us and are looking forward to working with Bellingham Marine as we move forward on the next phases,” remarked Karl Treiberg, Santa Barbara Harbor Facilities Manager.

Phase one included replacement of the marina’s 1160’ long headwalk and access gangway, as well as upgrades to the marina’s utility infrastructure.

To minimize disruptions to the marina’s operations and maintain boater access during construction, the new headwalk was built parallel to the existing. Once construction of the new walk was complete the existing headwalk was removed and the new walkway was moved into place.

Eric Noegel, Project manager for Bellingham Marine said the installation methodology was the result of good planning and communication with the City and their tenants. The City developed an alternate access plan for boaters to get to their slips at times when the single gangway was under construction.

The new headwalk at Santa Barbara Harbor’s Marina 1 is 10’ wide by 1160’ long and provides access to and from the marina’s 500 slips. Designed with a slightly higher freeboard then the existing docks, sloped transition floats were installed between the new headwalk and the existing mainwalks. Once adjacent mainwalks are rebuilt in later phases the sloped transition floats will be removed.

The project also included upgrades to the marina’s electrical and mechanical infrastructure along the headwalk including potable water, sewer, gas and fire suppression systems.

Bellingham Marine furnished all supervision, management, services, labor and material for the project. The next phase of construction, which will include replacement of docks “O” and “P”, has been awarded to Bellingham Marine and is scheduled to start next year.

As the world’s leading marina design-build construction company, Bellingham Marine produces Unifloat® concrete floating dock systems, Unideck® metal frame floating dock systems and Unistack® dry stack systems for marinas worldwide.
