Bellingham Marine, world renowned marina builder, announced the release of its 2011 calendar. Originally published in 2008 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the company’s first marina project, the calendars quickly became popular and are now a yearly event.
The glossy wall calendar features beautiful images of marinas from around the world that were built by Bellingham. Each year the company holds a photo contest and features the best of the images submitted in its annual calendar. Winners of the contest receive a cash award as well as photo credit.
The contest is open to the public; anyone over 18 can submit a photo. “The last two years the response from the public has been overwhelming,” said Roxie Comstock Manager of Business Enhancement for Bellingham Marine. “We had well over 200 photos submitted this year.”
According to Bellingham Marine, distribution of the calendar covers the globe reaching boaters, marina owners, developers, engineers and other industry professionals and enthusiasts on every continent.
This year’s calendar features Rybovich in Palm Beach, Florida; Half Moon Bay Marina in Auckland, New Zealand; Harbour Town Yacht Basin on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina, Marina YE in Melbourne, Australia; Perrotti Park in Newport, Rhode Island; Opua Marina in Bay of Islands, New Zealand; Island Moorings Marina in Port Aransas, Texas; Homer Small Boat Harbor in Homer, Alaska; Glorietta Bay Marina in Coronado, California; d’Albora Marina at Rushcutters Bay in Sydney, Australia; Sunroad Marina in San Diego, California; Port Ludlow Marina in Port Ludlow, Washington; La Playita Marina in Panama City, Panama and Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Redcliffe is a popular seaside destination situated on Moreton Bay in Australia with 22 km of coastline. Earlier this month, an enthusiastic boating public welcomed Redcliffe’s newest marina – Compass Marinas, Redcliffe.
The marina is being developed by Peter Harburg, Director of Compass Marinas under the approval of Port of Brisbane and Department of Transport Queensland.
Following several years of planning, stage one of the three stage marina development is now complete. The marina includes 74 marina berths ranging from 10 to 15 meters. The coordination of the project was handled by Karl Morris of Compass Marinas and Bellingham’s Project Development Manager, Wayne Priestley.
On shore amenities include an architecturally designed building development comprising of a marina administration facility, boat shed, shower and laundry facilities, and a covered community area. The marina also features a large grassed area and extensive landscaping. Pathways have been interwoven into the development to allow pedestrians & cyclists to access the waterfront surrounding the marina.
Having completed an extensive environmental planning approval and consultation process, the Compass Marinas Group decided to take its commitment to the environment one step further by eliminating any use of timber products in the marina. To meet the developer’s request for a marina free of treated lumber, Bellingham Marine provided a composite waler in lieu of its traditional timber waler. This is the first Unifloat marina designed and constructed by Bellingham Marine Australia in Queensland utilizing our full composite waler system.
To add further quality to the marina, single-piece rounded finger ends were utilized. This feature provides an improved visual appearance as well as adds protection and a more forgiving surface to berthing vessels. Other features of the marina include specially designed knee-brackets to create more water space and Platinum Marina Pedestals designed to match the Compass Marinas’ corporate colors of blue and gray.
In addition, vandal proof water taps were fitted to the entire marina, making it a requirement to have a key in order to turn on the water. Less dripping means less water is wasted, as each berth owner is responsible for their own water supply. Focusing further on the environment and the changing environmental requirements for boat mooring facilities, Compass Marinas also requested that a bilge and separate sewer pump out facility be added to the marina.

In the far reaches of the Central Bering Sea off the west coast of Alaska, in a region know for rough waters and brutal winters, fishermen at St. Paul Harbor eagerly await the start of next year’s fishing season and the installation of their new mooring facility. Bellingham Marine worked with General Contractor Dutra Dredging and the Central Bering Sea Fishermen’s Association to provide a small boat harbor for the local fishing fleet.
The turn-key, design/build project included final design specifications, fabrication and installation of a prestressed/precast concrete boat launch ramp, launch float, precast abutments, gangways, anchor systems and marina floats.
The remote location and harsh environment made for a number of unique challenges. All materials had to be pre-fabricated, sized and sent by barge to the site since there were no local sources for materials. In addition, the entire system, including piling, had to be designed to allow for easy removal. Each winter the marina will be disassembled and stored upland.
“This is truly a unique project with a number of components designed specifically for the site at St. Paul,” said Jesse Ellenz, General Manager for Bellingham Marine’s NW division. “The floats and prestressed concrete elements are stout and built to withstand heavy commercial use and harsh environmental conditions.”
The float system features heavy duty float modules fabricated from galvanized I-beams and tube steel truss frames with massive glu-lam walers supported by polyethylene encased tubs designed for this specific application. An 8” diameter steel bull rail was added for boats to tie off to and steel grating was utilized for the deck to provide a non slick surface. Additional design components include 30” freeboard, so the only components of the float system actually in the water are the tubs; wide stable walkways to accommodate motorized gator carts and a gravity anchor system, which provides the flexibility needed to remove the floats each winter.
Bellingham and Dutra worked under a tight schedule to get the floats to the site and installed for a trial installation before winter arrived at St. Paul this year. Once installed, the system was pulled from the water and stored upland till the spring when it will be reinstalled and used by the local fishing fleet.
Highlighted in the Discovery Channel’s popular show “Deadliest Catch, St. Paul Harbor is located on a small remote island just 40 square miles. The Bering Sea location results in cool weather year round with an annual average temperature of 34 degrees Fahrenheit and heavy fog during summer months.

Reconstruction of Alamitos Bay Marina in Long Beach, California, which has been held up in permitting for the past few years, is anticipated to move forward in spring 2011. The project calls for the complete replacement of the existing 1,967 slip marina over a period of four or five years. In addition to the docks and other marina structures, the marina’s parking lots, restrooms, gangways, seawall and utilities will also be rebuilt.
In May, a contract with Bellingham Marine, international marina builder, was fully executed for the completion of the design, much of the permitting and the start of construction in Basin 4.
The Long Beach Marinas, which include Alamitos Bay and the Downtown Marinas, are the largest singly run marina system west of Chicago. “A marina of this size comes with its own unique set of challenges,” said Jim Puder, General Manager for Bellingham Marine’s SW Division. “We have a strong team in place, and we are looking forward to providing the City and its tenants with a new marina facility that exceeds their expectations in every way.” Bellingham’s team includes Manson Construction, Reyes Construction, and Moffatt & Nichol. The team will be responsible for all waterside as well as landside improvements.
The last hurdle for the marina is a Coastal Development Permit from the State Coastal Commission. The City is expected to go before the Commission in January 2011.
Once complete, the new facility will boast the industry’s best in floating dock technology and the latest in green design. “The dock system and marina layout we’ve selected affords the most flexibility to meet our needs now as well as in the future,” said Mark Sandoval, Marina Manager of Long Beach’s marinas. “Several of the restrooms will also be fitted with solar panels,” added Sandoval.
The first phase of the reconstruction project is scheduled to begin in April of 2011.
