Richmond, BC, Canada – 9 June 2017 – On a rainy Thursday morning along the pier next to Steveston Landing, vendors peddle prawns, halibut and enormous Dungeness crabs. Visitors buzz about the public fish sales float, searching for the coveted spot prawns that are only available six weeks out of the year. The quaint little town, located in the southwest area of Richmond in British Columbia, makes you feel like you are stepping into the past. However, one step on the enormous new concrete floats holding the entire market up will remind you that times have changed.
Bellingham Marine engineered a proprietary method for lifting the 80-ton Steveston Harbour floats, saving both time and money for the client.
Steveston Harbour is one of Canada’s largest commercial fishing hubs, situated on the south arm of the Fraser River. The fishing dock has been open to the public since 1895 and was in serious need of repairs.
Bellingham Marine was awarded the contract by the Steveston Harbour Authority in March of 2016. The agreement included the manufacture and supply of 20 float modules, each of which:
- Measures 14 ft. × 60 ft.
- Weighs 160,000 lbs., nearly the same as a Boeing 737

New marina system developed for seasonal use provides stability, user comfort and high load capacity while facilitating easy installation, removal and storage.
Bellingham, WA, USA – 8 May 2017– The Miami International Boat Show (MIBS) produces an economic impact of over $600 million for the Miami area, so when show organizers at the NMMA were told they needed to find a new location, it quickly became the top priority. After considering many venues, one site stood out above the rest, Miami Marine Stadium Park. This option presented the challenge of bringing in a temporary wood dock system that would adhere to stringent EPA regulations while still providing the necessary engineering and design components required to accommodate the thousands of show visitors. The problem was that such a dock just didn’t exist…yet.
The docks, notably used at the Miami Boat Show, can be stacked and stored easily.
In light of the sensitive ecological environment, Bellingham Marine stepped up to the challenge, producing the world’s first 100% EPA compliant temporary marina with the ability to be compactly stacked in storage. Bellingham Marine mobilized key personnel to Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands to support local recovery and repair efforts. The company has set up a “Ready to Repair” hotline for marinas needing assistance.
Hamilton Island, Queensland, Australia – 7 April 2017 – “We waited till the evacuation of tourists had been completed, then our team headed north,” said Bellingham Marine’s John Spragg. “Greg Dunne and Paul Sorrel, from Bellingham Marine, and Darren Wilkinson, from M-Tech, arrived on Hamilton Island in the Whitsunday Islands on Tuesday. The chaos and level of devastation is truly heartbreaking.”
Bellingham Marine’s cyclone recovery team is on Hamilton Island in Queensland, Australia. The team is helping marinas hit by Cyclone Debbie get back up and running as quickly as possible.
“We are here to assist any marina damaged in the cyclone and to get them up and running again as quickly as possible.”
Cyclone Debbie made landfall on March 28, 2017 near Airlie Beach, Queensland, a popular tourist area. Wind gusts of 260km and an 8 metre storm surge wreaked havoc on the region causing wide spread devastation.
Intense winds and huge seas wrecked jetties, destroyed piers and left a line of shipwrecked yachts along the foreshore. Many marinas in the region have sustained considerable damage. Several are nearly gone.
According to news sources, insurers are using a triage system to prioritise policyholders’ claims in order to get assistance to those with the most urgent needs first.
