Organizers of Yacht & Boat Korea 2011 wrapped up another successful show in Gyeongsangnam-do. The show ran from May 4th – the 8th in one of Korea’s busiest leisure boating ports, Jinhae.
The show was opened with a keynote address by Everett Babbitt, President of the industry’s largest marina construction company, Bellingham Marine. Mr. Babbitt’s presentation focused on Korea’s emerging boating market and the country’s need for properly designed infrastructure to support its growing boating public and to ensure a financial return on its initial investment. In addition, Babbitt provided an overview of the current marina market and trends worldwide
The theme for this year’s show was “awakening the dream.” According to individuals involved in the local industry, the Korean government has approved the development of more than 40 new marina facilities along the Korean coastline. “Building a marina is more than just placing pontoons in a body of water for boats to tie up to,” said Babbitt. “Proper engineering, detailed planning and a commitment to building it right the first time will ensure the long term success of Korea’s plan to significantly grow its boating industry.”
Delivering a similar message to the emerging market in China, Bellingham Marine’s General Manager of the company’s Asian operations, John Spragg, spoke at China’s Shanghai show in April. Spragg echoed Babbitt’s statements about proper design and offered suggestions on future yacht club development in China.
“Taking the right approach to marina design and construction is absolutely critical to the long term success of these emerging markets,” remarked Spragg.

Renovation work is underway at Westhaven Marina located in downtown Auckland, New Zealand. The marina is replacing 106 of its berths with modern concrete floating pontoons.
Bellingham Marine New Zealand was awarded the design/build contract for the project in December 2011. According to the company, crews arrived on site on March 13th, and the project is expected to be completed in July.
The marina’s metal tube, timber-decked pontoons, which were installed in the 1970’s will be replaced with like kind berths utilizing Bellingham’s Unifloat® floating pontoon technology and fitted with new service pedestals provisioned with water and power. New concrete piles will be driven for anchoring the Unifloat system and for the outer mooring piles. Existing intermediate timber mooring piles will be reused.
The project also calls for a large diameter steel pile and concrete panel wave screen to be installed. “The marina currently gets quite a bit of wave action from boat traffic in the area which was previously protected by an old dinghy rack structure,” remarked Peter Anderson, General Manager of Bellingham Marine New Zealand. “
Westhaven Marina has had a long standing relationship with Bellingham Marine and we have confidence working with them on this project,” remarked Russell Mathieson, Marina Manager of Westhaven. “We already have some of their docks in our harbour and have been very pleased with the quality of the Unifloat system, and the professionalism of the Bellingham team.”
Westhaven Marina is one of the largest marinas in the southern hemisphere. The marina provides moorage for more than 1800 boats with berths from 9 meters to 30 meters in length. Westhaven is owned and operated by Waterfront Auckland, a CCO of the Auckland Council, tasked with revitalizing the Auckland Waterfront including the Wynyard Quarter, home of Auckland’s marine cluster.

Residents of Coronado Cay’s upscale development, Trinidad Village, in Southern California, have recently traded in their 35 year old docks for modern concrete floating docks.
Trinidad Village Docks, Inc. (TVDI) hired world renowned marina builder, Bellingham Marine, to move forward with a major renovation of their docks in 2008. Plans called for a complete overhaul including new docks and anchoring, upgraded utilities and a new layout. Prior to the renovation, the residential docks at Trinidad Village were owned by TVDI and featured a common walkway where all fingers were attached. The new configuration privatized each of the individual docks and resulted in a number of features the homeowners required: more berths, separate docks for each home, and a reduction in the marina’s overwater coverage (shading). The benefits to homeowners included private docks with increased safety, two slips per home and the benefits to environmental health from opening more of the water space.
Additional features included personal dock boxes, individual electric power centers complete with fresh water and two 30-amp receptacles and a safety swim ladder supplied by Up and Out. 33 aluminum gangways were also supplied for the project to provide individual homes with private access to their dock.
The project also called for complete replacement of TVDI’s ten docks adjacent to a common area. These docks were replaced with “like kind” slips featuring Bellingham Marine’s Unifloat technology, and they are being made available to other residents.
“This was a unique project for us,” remarked Ammon Riordan, Project Supervisor for Bellingham Marine. “Almost all of the docks were custom in some fashion. Many of the docks were uniquely shaped with varying gangway orientations and pedestal placements. Some even had a sloped surface for dragging kayaks up onto the dock.”
Bellingham’s scope of work included design, engineering, labor, materials and installation for all components of the project. “This was a large and complex project that required close coordination among the homeowners, TVDI’s Board of Directors, our project manager and Bellingham’s skilled and experienced personnel,” remarked RG Head, representative for TVDI. “Each of the homeowners is proud that we have persevered through the dense set of administrative, community, regulatory, engineering and construction hurdles. At every step of the way, we were aided and assisted by Bellingham’s managers and engineers.”
RG added, “We are glad that we chose Bellingham for this project, and all of us are immensely proud of the high quality docks they have built. Key individuals involved in the construction in addition to Ammon Riordan include Jim Puder, General Manager of Bellingham’s Southwestern Division and Paul Buckley, TVDI’s Project Manager.”
Trinidad Village is perfectly situation on two channels of San Diego Bay in the heart of Coronado Cays. Each homeowner has private access to a boat dock of his own design and to his own requirements. The community also features a clubhouse with shared dock access for residents and their guests.

What began as a small operation through a licensee in 1985 to bring world class boating facilities to New Zealand has culminated today into what is one of the leading marina construction companies in New Zealand and the South Pacific.
Bellingham Marine New Zealand and its employees are celebrating 25 years of operation this year during its silver anniversary, and reflecting on its past while looking to its future. Although much has changed since its first marina project in 1985, Bellingham Marine New Zealand has maintained the same principle throughout its 25 year history: bring to each project a commitment to utilizing proven technology and proper construction, to adopting strict quality control measures, and to conducting all transactions with a level of professionalism that is unrivalled. A quarter of a century and nearly 9000 berths later those same commitments remain the foundation of the company’s success.
“Our presence in New Zealand was born out of a desire to provide developers and marina owners in New Zealand with the technology and know-how needed to design and construct the worlds’ best marinas,” explained Everett Babbitt, President of Bellingham Marine. The company first entered the market through a licensee agreement, which was later purchased back by the company. Under the agreement, Bellingham Marine supplied all technical expertise including engineering support.
“Today Bellingham Marine New Zealand is a local company that benefits from a global company’s international network and resources,” remarked Babbitt.
According to the company, over the past ten years Bellingham Marine New Zealand has contributed in excess of $35 million to the local economy through supporting local contractors and suppliers and paid over $5.5 million in wages and salaries to New Zealand residents. The company also estimates that is has brought into New Zealand over $12 million in export dollars in the past ten years.
“Although we are part of an international team, not a dime of our profits leave New Zealand,” said Peter Anderson, General Manager of Bellingham Marine New Zealand. “For all business purposes we are a local company. We just have the unique benefit of having a business partner that operates on a global level with a knowledge base and years of experience that are unmatched.”
Despite the company’s humble beginnings, Bellingham Marine New Zealand’s Unifloat® quickly grew and dominated the market building most of New Zealand’s current berths. Today, the company is lead by General Manager Peter Anderson. Under Anderson, the company continues its mission of building world class boating facilities for New Zealand and the South Pacific with an unwavering commitment to professionalism.
“I feel fortunate to have been given the opportunity to lead a company that, in all respects, has built New Zealand’s current day boating infrastructure,” said Anderson. “I see nothing but greatness and opportunity for us in the future. I consider it a privilege to work among the best in the industry.”
