Floating ferry terminal dock at Glen Cove

BELLINGHAM MARINE COMPLETES NEW FERRY TERMINAL IN NEW YORK

August 13, 2012 / No Comments

Bellingham Marine recently announced the completion of Glen Cove Ferry Terminal in Glen Cove, New York. The new floating ferry terminal is a story of perseverance and innovation. After 20 years in the making and several years of construction delays, the state-of-the-art terminal is complete and ready to welcome boats.

Designed to accommodate multiple ferries up to 100 feet in length and passenger loading and offloading, the terminal at Glen Cove offers a relatively unique design solution in ferry terminal construction. The terminal features a 15 foot wide by 375 foot long floating concrete dock that sits five feet above the water and a 31 foot by 30 foot match-cast floating loading platform. The massive concrete floats used for the project measure over 9 feet tall and are anchored by 20 inch steel pile recessed into the concrete platform.

An elaborate ramp and railing system as well as custom fender system, which allows the boats to pull in bow first, were also integrated into the floating structure. The fender system is composed of multiple 12” rubber fenders mounted to galvanized steel brackets attached to the side of the concrete floats. The specially designed system provides a well-protected landing for the ferries and accommodates easy loading and offloading.

“Integrating the design of the bow loading fender system into the floating structure was a challenge,” said Steve Noonan, General Manager of Bellingham Marine’s Northeast Division. “However, the team’s extensive marina design and construction experience enabled us to meet the challenge and create an impressive ferry terminal the City of Glen Cove will enjoy for years to come.”

In addition to the floating terminal, the project included work to increase the width of the channel, a new bulkhead, improved public access, a terminal building and parking facility. Chesterfield Associates from Westhampton Beach, NY was hired as the General Contractor. Bellingham Marine was responsible for the design and construction of the floating terminal. The success of the project is a testimony to the dedication of the many people who worked to make the project a reality. According to City officials, the new terminal lies on a portion of land that was among the most highly contaminated industrial areas in the state of New York. With the help of many supporters the site was completely remediated and opened up for commercial use.

The city plans to begin using the new terminal in 2013 to provide service between Glen Cove and key metropolitan centers in Long Island Sound including the city of Manhattan.

As the world’s leading marina design-build construction company, Bellingham Marine produces Unifloat® concrete floating dock systems as well as timber and metal frame systems. The company also produces Unistack® dry stack systems for marinas worldwide.

M-Tech receives Export Award

M-TECH AWARDED ‘AUSTRALIAN MARINE INDUSTRY BEST EXPORT PERFORMANCE – SMALL EXPORTER’

August 7, 2012 / No Comments

The 2012 Club Marine Australian Marine Export & Superyacht Industry Awards, organized by the Australian International Marine Export Group (AIMEX) were announced earlier this week at the AIMEX and Club Marine annual networking function in Sydney’s Darling Harbor.

Based in Queensland, M-Tech (Marine Technologies), part of the Bellingham Marine Group, was awarded “Best Marine Industry Export Performance (Small)’.

M-Tech specialize in the manufacture of innovative marine and leisure utility equipment and accessories, ranging from Marina Utility Service Pedestals, Emergency Service Equipment, Sanitation Pump out Equipment to Instant Response Fire Carts. Their export market is growing, and due to the vast stocks that are held in their Queensland facility, spare parts can be exported within 24 hours, anywhere in the world.

Currently manufacturing to Asia and the Middle East, M-Tech has recently appointed a European Distributor and is now ideally placed and structured to service the European market. 2011/2012 secured M-Tech with the three largest marina projects in the Middle East; Najmat Marina (Abu Dhabi), Marasay Marina (Abu Dhabi) and The Wave Marina (Oman).

As the marine industry has been struggling through an economically tough period, M-Tech’s key point of difference was their forceful approach in successfully securing these export opportunities. The appointment of Darren Wilkinson in 2011 as General Manager provided M-Tech with a wealth of experience and advantageous relationships.

Currently exporting to over 26 different countries, M-Tech is well on the way to expanding their global coverage even further. And with Australian manufacturing facing tough trading conditions, M-Tech continues to excel in the International marketplace.

WHERE’S THE MONEY: HOW TO GET PROJECT FINANCING

July 25, 2012 / No Comments

For those owners that can bankroll their own development projects, congratulations. They’re at the top of the financial food chain. If they have enough cash flow and collateral to borrow money from banks at current low interest rates, they’re what bankers call “bankable,” and they’re in the pink. They can borrow at or near today’s historic low interest rates.

“There is plenty of money around,” said Sid Spiro, founder and president of Regent Bank in Davie, Fla. “But bankers are returning to traditional lending criteria. Basically, you need cash flow and character.”

There are three tiers of financing that marina developer’s access to fund a project: commercial paper, traditional banking and alternative lending or “bridge” loans. And there’s a new wrinkle: financing offered by the marina construction companies.
