A series of upgrades including a unique assisted kayak launch and a low freeboard dock for paddle craft open up Coronado Bay to a diverse population of watersport enthusiasts.
Coronado, California, USA – 25 August 2017 – Glorietta Bay Marina in Coronado, California is a public boating facility owned by the City. Bellingham Marine rebuilt half of the marina in 2007. Replacement of C-dock and improvements to the marina’s boat launch were left for a later date.
In 2016, the remaining work at Glorietta went out to bid. Bellingham Marine came in low and was awarded the contract for all land and waterside improvements.
“It was important to the City that they make the most of the renovation opportunity,” shared Kevin Ketchum, Principal and General Manager of California Yacht Marina, operator of Glorietta Bay. “The items most critical to them were better universal access, environmental stewardship and the long-term value of the property.” Continue Reading…
Concrete and timber docks merge seamlessly to provide a custom solution that is both luxurious and purposeful.
Wrightsville Beach, NC, USA – 11 August 2017 – When Wrightsville Beach Marina and Yacht Club in North Carolina decided it was time to renovate their 100-slip marina they turned to Bellingham Marine, world renowned marina builder, for help. The ownership group knew they wanted a modern facility that would be a source of pride. They also knew their site had several unique demands that needed to be addressed to ensure the long-term success of the marina.

The new docks at the Wrightsville Beach Marina are a mix of beauty and brawn. Tough concrete and beautiful timber combine with ease.
Located on a bustling Intracoastal Waterway, Wrightsville Beach Marina needed wave protection. The marina also wanted to be able to welcome large yachts. The owners were attracted to the visual appeal of traditional timber docks but were concerned about the timber dock’s ability to knock down the waves generated by the waterway’s heavy boat traffic.
There was also a concern about water depth along the seawall. In an extreme low tide event, timber would have the advantage. Bellingham Marine’s timber docks have a shallow 6-inch draft compared to the deeper draft of their concrete counterparts. The shallow draft would mitigate any possible concern of the dock grounding out during extreme tidal shifts.
As stewards of the marine lifestyle, it is important that we continually draw in new crowds to keep the industry alive. Find out how The Yards marina opened the DC waterfront up to a whole new generation of boating enthusiasts.

Children splashing under a waterfall in an enormous wading pool, a parade of mothers pushing strollers down the boardwalk, yoga classes, concerts, artisanal ice cream, taco-Korean fusion cuisine, residential apartments in a former Navy Yard foundry and office working spaces in a repurposed lumber shed are some of the things you’ll find at The Yards on the Anacostia River in Washington, D.C.

The Yards Marina in Washington, D.C., is a small but active marina within a much larger waterfront development.
The water is humming with life as well. Water taxis soon will take people to work and play. Paddleboards and kayaks explore the river, and on the Education Dock, Living Classrooms Foundation, a non-profit organization, teaches disadvantaged youth life skills and gives them hands-on job training.
On game day boaters moor at The Yards Marina, have dinner in an au courant locally owned restaurant, walk to Nationals Park baseball stadium to see a game and return home under the stars by boat — avoiding the traffic snarl on the highways. The Yards development has made this 48-acre, once-abandoned industrial site explode with life and created a new neighborhood on the river.

It’s a familiar story around the world. The once bustling waterfront, the city’s gateway to the world, was a tableau of sailing ships awaiting the tide. Then railroads and later automobiles turned the focus inland. The waterfront became a forgotten quarter of night clubs and bars surrounded by oily water and foul air.

The Wharf is part of an ongoing urban waterfront revitalization project encompassing 50 acres of waterside infrastructure.
By the 1950s and 60s, cities began building renewal projects that were mostly unremarkable single-use buildings with their backs to the water. Broad freeways truncated the waterfront from the rest of the city, leaving it isolated and neglected.
The dark days of urban waterfront neglect are over. There is a new sense of optimism, pride and possibility. Among a number of ongoing urban waterfront revitalisation projects, The Wharf in Washington DC is the largest in the US and arguably the most comprehensive and consequential. The District of Columbia, “the District” as the locals call it, is turning its face toward the water again.
